According to BayNature.org, "on a low terrace about one third of a mile south of Goat Rock State Beach on a rock outcrop are rubbing marks about two to four meters above the ground that researchers believe were caused by ancient mammoths. Mammoths are believed to have roamed here as recently as 40,000 years ago. Although the mammoths are gone, the beach is a haul out area for harbor seals and sea lions."
