Five Assegais Country Estate features a spectacular 50km network of 1 and 2 day hiking trails on this 1500ha nature conservancy. Rated by Green Flag as moderate to difficult with pristine landscape. Trails traverse through sandstone mazes, yellow-wood forests and ancient grasslands. Over 109 different species of trees have been identified and it is also home to game including zebra, wilderbeest and blesbokke. Waterfalls galore.

There are a number of different accommodation options:
* Three unique and comfortable hiking camps. Each of the camps has a fully equipped kitchen, hot showers and indoor and outdoor braai areas. Maximum group so of 20 people.

* The four-star fishing lodge offers a peaceful and luxurious duvet wilderness experience. Sleeps 8 people in four double rooms. Self-catering and catered options available. Jacuzzi, full suite of DSTV, open plan living, kitchen and dining area. The house is a renovated stone farmhouse with a little bit of history.

There are four dams stocked with brown and rainbow trout. A crafty fisherman recently caught a 2.8kg brownie.

THE ESCARPMENT TRAIL (1 day)
Distance: ±13.5km

Start & Finish: God's Window Camp
Look out for: Uitkomste Falls, Bankspruit river, sandstone maze, ancient stone terraces and game.

HELL'S BELLS TRAIL (1 day)

Distance: ±8.4km... we strongly recommend taking the short cut, this is still a good 4 hour walk.
Starts & Finishes: God’s Window Camp
Look out for: Helskloof Gorge, waterfalls, Purplecrested Louries.

PONGOLA EXPRESS TO GOD'S WINDOW LOOP (1 day)

Distance: ±15km
Starts & Finish: This hike is a circular route. Can start from either Pongola Express or God’s Window Camps
Look out for: Mac Falls, gorges, game

OOM PAUL'S BACKPACKERS ROUTE (2 days)

Distance: ± 20km
Start / Finish: This is a circular route that can start at either Gods Window or Bermanzi camps
Look out for: Uitkomste Falls, Escarpment, indigenous forest, sandstone formations and game

PONGOLA EXPRESS AND CANDLEWOOD LOOP (1 day)

Distance: ± 16km
Start / Finish: Pongola Express or Candlewood Camp
Look out for: Mac Falls, ancient grasslands, Uitkomste Falls
Where
On the R541 between Machadodorp and Badplaas. Three hours from Johannesburg and 1.5 hours from Nelspruit. On route to Kruger National Park, Swaziland and Mozambique.

Hiking Camps
Pongola Express
This camp is renovated 1934 railway coaches nestled into a forested area. There are 6 compartments that sleep 2 to 4 people. A wide covered veranda and indoor dining area provide a good socialising space. There is a fridge, gas stove and microwave. Bedding is available at this camp.

God’s Window Camp
Two double story huts snuggled into the spectacular sandstone formations. Each hut sleeps 8 people in bunk beds. There are ‘loos with a view’ and a viewing deck. There is a fridge, gas stove top, paraffin lamps, indoor and outdoor braai areas.

Candlewood Camp (No electricity)
This green camp has a wonderful view of Uitkomst Waterfall. Hot water is supplied by an old-fashioned donkey geyser (wood burning). Solar lighting is in place and lamps are provided. There are two huts that each sleeps 10 people in bunk beds. There is a gas stove top. No outdoor braai between May and October. You are truly away from it all here.
