Popular Trips in Death Valley National Park
In less than a mile driving north from the Badwater Basin, the Devil’s Golf Course was a complete opposite of the smooth surface of the salt flats. As a result of wind and rain erosion, the whole area was made into jagged spires from large salt crystals. This area was so rough that only the devil could play golf on such rough surfaces.
Forget about playing golf here, I think even the devil...
Taking the easiest route from Las Vegas, it took me 3 hours to drive to Death Valley. Driving along Hwy 190 before arriving Furnace Creek, we stopped over at Zabriskie Point. A short walk uphill from the parking lot led us to a lookout over a maze of wildly eroded and vibrantly colored badlands. Down under the badland we can see some coloured material that looked like a dried creek running under...
A short hike up Telephone Canyon in Death Valley National Park. It's high clearance 2WD to the trailhead from Emigrant Canyon road. Telephone Arch is small but interesting, Telephone Spring is long dry but the remains of the mill are interesting. A nice side canyon to the south with some narrows, and a few side washes one has a nice waterfall grotto perhaps 25 feet tall.
From Scottys Castle Road, it's 4.5 miles to the mouth of the gorge. I went about two miles into the wash, and it wasn't getting any more interesting so I turned around. The gorge is supposed to be much nicer at the top end, accessible by 35 miles of gravel road (one way).
Another desert wash hike... This was the result of some random exploring at the north end of the park on the Big Pine Road, just a little bit north of the Grapevine Springs area. I haven't been able to find the name of this canyon on any of the maps I have. It is north of Little Grapevine Canyon. After exploring one wash that shortly became too bouldered for easy travel, I...
An easy day hike up Willow Canyon from the bottom, to the 40-foot waterfall in the narrows. Also a short exploration up a side canyon.
Two interesting canyon hikes from the same trailhead. Scotty's Canyon was the main hangout for legendary Death Valley Scotty, and Ashford Canyon had lots of mining activity.
A dayhike up Virgin Spring Canyon to the springs (dry) and the Rock House Ruins.
We explored Slit Canyon just Northwest from Hole in the Wall in Death Valley National Park. This canyon was a
rare find with fun twists, turns, and lots a dry falls to climb! We
hiked about 3 miles into this impressive canyon for a memorable day.
