Emmaline & Cirque Lakes, Comanche Peak Wilderness
by jimlarkey on Sep 28, 2009
Rustic (historical), Colorado, United States
11.6 miles
Easy hike, and great Fall color......Colorado shows off her Gold!  The hike starts at the Emmaline TH, and for 3 miles follows an old logging road to the former mill site, Cirque Meadow.  Beyond Cirque Meadow, the trail narrows through a spruce and fir forest, and begins to climb.  The final climb to the hanging valley, is across boulders, and a steep granite face.  A trail leads between Cirque and Emmaline Lakes....

B-17F Bomber Crash Site, Crown Point

10.2 miles
The night of June 13, 1944 was an extraordinary night for the Flying Fortress crew of #42-30891, and remembered for years to come...including these hikers.  Extraordinary because of the dark side of the crash, and the miracle of 6 survivors.  Never before has there been survivors of a B-17 bomber crash in the Colorado mountains. The hike begins at the Old Flowers Rd TH, and you'll notice the memorial plaque across from the...

I have hiked both sides of Bulwark Ridge, the North Fork of the Big Thompson Drainage, and the Miller Fork Drainage most recently.  Thought it might be interesting to see what was above me on the Ridge.Always have to have a goal...while on the Ridge, might as well tag both Signal Peaks....not!  After ascending 3000' on the Ridge, the boot-deep snow made route finding very time consuming.  I had lost the trail,...

B-17F Bomber Crash Site, Crown Point...Failed Attempt
by jimlarkey on Nov 24, 2008
Rustic (historical), Colorado, United States
8.8 miles
The B-17 Crash Site (Crown Point) was a destination too far for this late in the season.  Our first snafu was that the USFS gate was closed at Jack's Gulch (contrary to the open desigantion on the USFS website), so we were not able to access the Flowers Rd TH.  We were able to reach the crash site from the Flowers TH in 2009...see this trip report. The gate closure forced us to the...

North Fork of the Big Thompson River, Deserted Village
by jimlarkey on Jan 04, 2011
Glen Haven, Colorado, United States
8.6 miles
A great hike for flatlanders acclimating to Colorado's high-country, and yet offers some history about the early development of Estes Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP).  Along the trail, you'll pass by an old cabin in the "Deserted Village" area, which was the hunting camp/resort of the ambitious Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, the Fourth Earl of Dunraven. In the late 19th century, the Earl began a focused effort to illegally acquire land in...
