Aa year-round recreational area offering the best of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, biking, golf, whitewater rafting and kayaking, windsurfing and kiteboarding, boating, bird watching, photography, downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing – the list is endless.

Just taking a drive through the Columbia River Gorge is an experience in itself as you will be in awe of this spectacular geological wonder. The Columbia River is the second largest river in North America, starting in northern Idaho and southeastern British Columbia, and traveling over 1,200 miles to the ocean. Through millenniums of geologic events, waterfalls have found their home in the Columbia River Gorge. A visit to the area is not complete without a visit to the breathtaking waterfalls.

On Saturday morning after waking up and a great breakfast from Eleanor at the Cabin, Chris, Toshi, Emily and I headed around Mt. Hood down to the ColumbiaRiver Gorge for a hike I had found in one of Jason’s books up Eagle Creek to Tunnel Falls.  Chris had done the hike several times before and knew some secrets the book didn’t tell so he was to be our guide.  We got to...

The most spectacular wildflower meadows of the Columbia Gorge drape the alp-like slopes of Dog Mountain, north of the Columbia River in Washington. in May and June these hills are alive yellow balsamrot, red paintbrush and blue lupine. Even flowerless seasons provide breathtaking views of the Columbia Gorge. Such beauty has made the steep climb popular, but with three trails to the top, you can choose your route.

At Beacon Rock State Park - Nice short walk to some pretty waterfalls - then a nice picnic spot overlooking the Gorge - for a longer walk, take the ridge trail north and descend by an old fireroad through a campground by the creek

Eagle Creek Trail to Wahtum Lake Jct

26-May-2012.  This is, without question, one of the most beautiful hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. The trail follows Eagle Creek up a long valley, climbing all the way, as far as you want to go. I rated it 4-stars for difficulty mainly for distance, as the 1600 foot gain is very gradual. The first section of the trail, to Punchbowl Falls, can be pretty crowded with "tourist" hikers, but after that it...

Eagle Creek to High Bridge Hike

Ramona and I decided to do the Eagle Creek hike again this morning.  The weather looked terrible, so we bundled up and headed out.  Good thing we layered - it was like 55 degrees.  With it getting so dark so early we set a goal of getting to High Bridge by 1:30 so we'd be back to the car by sunset.  Not that the sun ever came out today.  It was very...

This hike is listed on various websites as one of the hardest in all of Oregon, and I would agree, especially if you go up the Starvation Ridge trail.  Our group decided to go up the Mt Defiance trail and back down Starvation Ridge, and we were so glad we did. Starvation Ridge trail is the steepest hiking trail I've ever been on, and it's relentless for miles and miles.  I passed...

Take the old highway that passes by all the other falls. Have been going up there since I was a kid.

One of the wonders of the earth. You will love the mixing of the green and the blue, of course if you are not caught with the rain.

This was one of my first hikes in the Gorge and I really need to do more. Although Mt Defiance was the hardest hike I've ever done. Stopped at Multnomah falls a few times, but there is so much more this area has to offer.

Port Ludlow hiking club hiked for a week out of Hood River. Some of the best hikes in the Northwest. Club members hiked over 30 easy to challenging hikes. Very reasonable accommodations in Hood River. High vistas, breathtaking waterfalls and rivers, old forests - all well maintained.
