Our Mt Yale climb is a warmup for a Challenger/Kit-Carson climb a few days later. Pretty much of a walkup, but some good views of the neighboring Collegiate peaks. We spent the day before and after the climb soaking in the hot springs at the Cottonwood Inn. What a way to climb 14ers!The climb was uneventful, except for a couple of our climber's summit experience....static discharges. Some of our team hit the summit...
Inter-Laken was a popular 1879 mountain resort for exclusive clientel in the booming Leadville area. The National Trust, in conjunction with Colorado Preservation, Inc. and the US Forest Service are restoring this former premier resort to it's former glory. You can explore the Inter-Laken ghost resort by a short, easy hike along the Continental Divide Trail. The trail is well groomed, with little elevation gain, and great views of apens along the...
My and some friends decided to plan a trip which would allow
us nice backpacking trip into the beautiful Colorado backcountry. We decided to
pack into a lake called Hartenstein Lake. The trip in to the lake was about 3.5
miles. We hiked in on a Friday and scored the best camp spot on the lake.
The following day was planned to hike up one of Colorado's 14er's (that is a mountain
over 14,000 feet tall). Mt....
Cross Clear Creek below the beaver ponds. Find a faint trail and follow it south to where it joins an old mining road which heads up towards Silver Basin. Leave the road near the second set of switch backs. Bush whack through the forest to open territory. Climb to the continental divide and then onto the summit.

This is the second of a 2-part report sharing the experience of the Mt Harvard to Mt Columbia Traverse. It covers the climb. See this for the backpack into the basecamp in the upper reaches of the Horn Fork Basin of the Collegiates Wilderness. My compliments to Bill Middlebrook, webmaster of 14ers.com for his very complete route description of The Combo, that was our guide. An alpine start with headlamps was in order for this...
The S. Fork Lake Creek Road (FS 391) is used to access the LaPlata Peak Trail, leading to the summit of LaPlata (14,361'). Our late season backcountry ski trip extended past the LaPlata TH, following the creek upstream to the McNasser Gulch Rd. Looking SW'ly the entrance to McNasser Gulch, the hiker can catch a glimpse of Peekaboo Gulch. Looking S'ly, the entrance to Sayres Gulch is evident.
Why climb Huron? The 3400' of ascension from the 4WD TH is the least of all the Sawatch 14ers. It's a walk-up, with some great views of the Continental Divide, including the "Three Apostles", Missouri, Iowa Mtns. Looking N'ly from the summit, Leadville can be seen on a clear day, as well as Mt. Elbert and Massive, both 14ers.Stopping at the old Banker Mine site on the way down, gives the calf-muscles...
My brother in law and I had climbed Mt. Mitchell in N.C. (6,684 ft) in 2008 and Mt. Washington in N.H. (6,632 ft) in 2009, it was time to step it up so we chose the highest 14er in Colorado and second tallest mountain in the contingent U.S., Mt. Elbert. At 14,440 ft., it is the second tallest mountain to Mt. Whitney in CA by only 54 feet (14,494 ft).We flew into...
