Laurent organized a super overnight backpacking trip to Sword Lake. I've only backpacked one other time (to Henry Coe State Park's Wasno Pond), I was excited to go visit the Sierra. The drive up to the parking lot was dusty, rocky and slow. We were in Laurent's high clearance vehicle, which was a GOOD thing. I suspect the Prius could make it, but it would NOT be pleasant. The rocks are pretty...
On paper, Sword Lake does not fit my definition of a great destination. It is a popular lake, not a place to go for solitude. It’s not above treeline or filled with pristine glacier-fed waters. It is surrounded by forest so the views are minimal. There are mosquitoes and noisy boyscouts. There are no fish. The drive to the trailhead is dusty. The hike is short and unchallenging.Nevertheless, this is one of...

Sierra Club snow camping Group 2 1st trip.On the way in, we went off the road and followed a route through the woods along Lake Alpine. On the way out, we took the more direct route and walked back on the road (shared with speeding snow mobiles).Pictures on Sierra Club snow camping websitehttp://venice.hostgo.com/~snoozybe/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=45122My pictures on Flickrhttp://flickr.com/photos/jwania/sets/72157613334242112/
This was a nice day hike from Mosquito Lakes to Heiser Lake. There is an initial climb leaving Mosquito Lakes and then it gets easier. There is a sign about a half of a mile into the hike that you are entering the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. We passed by many meadows with wildflowers along the way. There is another climb close to Heiser Lake.Heiser Lake is small and picturesque. We had lunch by...
