Calvert Cliffs State Park is a day-use park featuring a sandy beach, unique fossils, recycled tire playground, a freshwater and tidal marshland and 13 miles of hiking trails located in Calvert County. The massive cliffs from which Calvert Cliffs SP was named dominates the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay for thirty miles in Calvert County and were formed over 15 million years ago when all of Southern Maryland was covered by a warm, shallow sea. When the sea receded 20-25 million years ago, marking the end of the Miocene period, cliffs were exposed and began eroding. Today these cliffs reveal the remains of prehistoric species Including sharks, whales, rays, and seabirds that were the size of small airplanes.

Trying out the hiking gear as if we were camping. Got to a clearing & pitched tents and set up stoves on the windy coast area. Also did some off trail hiking. Lost last half mile due to iphone crash

Calvert Cliffs State Park is an extremely popular family-friendly park in Southern Maryland.  There is a large playground, picnic tables, pavilions, and lots of parking (though it fills up quickly on nice days).  This park features a 2 mile trail to the beach where many fossils, sharks teeth, fossilized wood, and shells can be found and kept.  Megalodon (prehistoric shark) teeth have been known to be found along the beach as well.The...

First time visiting Calvert Cliffs. Gorgeous and easy hike (even for a five year old!). Time spent at the beach looking for sharks teeth, but no luck. Hiked back the two miles in pouring rain...what fun!

Beautiful, easy 2 mile hike each way (even my five year old was able to handle it). Well maintained trails and gorgeous sandy beach views once you reach the bay. Pack a screen or colander if you want to sift through the sand for sharks teeth. Wear a bathing suit under clothes as swimming is refreshing on a hot day.
