Cache La Poudre River Canyon

Colorado, United States
 (4 votes, 4 reviews)
Less than a half hour drive from downtown Fort Collins the Cache La Poudre River breaks free from the sloped canyon walls that cradle it's bounty of crystal clear, snow fed waters. Heading east on Highway 14, just a mile from Ted's Place at highway 287, the Poudre Canyon Highway begins it's 40 mile paralleled journey with the Poudre River. This marks the gateway to one of Colorado's most treasured nartural areas. Activities abound: fishing, river rafting, kyaking, inner-tubing, hiking, mountan biking, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and more. The eastern entrance to the canyon starts out at 5000 feet and gently climbs to over 10,000 feet at Cameron Pass on your way to the tiny community of Gould, CO. Along the way there is a world of trails and campgrounds....

Greyrock Trail & Summit

The Greyrock trail is a popular Fort Collins hike, with very little windshield time, and offers a good workout.  If you choose to go all the way to the summit, you'll be rewarded with views of the Plains to the east, Mummy Range to the south, and the Rawahs to the west. The trail we hiked was a loop trail, south of Greyrock, the western leg of which leads through the Greyrock Meadows. ...

Triangle Mountain (8,415')

Biggest bang for the buck!  The is the little hike that could.  Triangle Mountain (8,415') is a great hike to introduce flatlanders or young hikers to the mountains.  The 1200' vertical climb and 3.3 mi. roundtrip strech is easily doable, and the views of the Continental Divide from the summit are wonderful. We were surprised to find in the summit register that Gerry & Jennifer Roach found this little knob worthy to climb...twice...

Wintersteen Trail, via Greyrock TH
by jimlarkey on Nov 09, 2009

8.3 miles
Our plan was to shuttle hike the old Wintersteen Pack Trail, by leaving a car at the Greyrock TH, and Gateway Park.  Last Spring, we tried hiking the 5 mi. Wintersteen from the Gateway Park (low end) TH, but only got 3.5 mi.s before turning around, short of our goal. This time we hiked about 2 mi.s up the well maintained Greyrock Trail, looking for the junction with the Wintersteen.  The old pack...

Alpine tundra, wildflowers, cirques, Continental Divide views.........what a trip!  This is a must do trip for anyone planning on spending some time in the area. The trip we took was a shuttle hike, starting at the Michigan Ditch TH, and exiting at the American Lakes TH.  I chose to walk out to Highway 14, rather than wait for my pickup at the American Lakes TH.  So the actual TH to TH hike would...

Easy hike, and great Fall color......Colorado shows off her Gold!  The hike starts at the Emmaline TH, and for 3 miles follows an old logging road to the former mill site, Cirque Meadow.  Beyond Cirque Meadow, the trail narrows through a spruce and fir forest, and begins to climb.  The final climb to the hanging valley, is across boulders, and a steep granite face.  A trail leads between Cirque and Emmaline Lakes....

The night of June 13, 1944 was an extraordinary night for the Flying Fortress crew of #42-30891, and remembered for years to come...including these hikers.  Extraordinary because of the dark side of the crash, and the miracle of 6 survivors.  Never before has there been survivors of a B-17 bomber crash in the Colorado mountains. The hike begins at the Old Flowers Rd TH, and you'll notice the memorial plaque across from the...

Greyrock Mtn (7,613') is a popular trip for Fort Collins hikers.  So this hike was not about repeating what many of us have already done, many times.  But rather to see an unknown side of Greyrock....climbing 4 ranked peaks that are neighbors to Greyrock Mtn:Point 7180"North Greyrock", Pt 7681"Aiguille du Greyrock", Pt 7456"South Greyrock", Pt 7309Fortunately, we had a master mountaineer of northern Colorado who orchestrated the climbs.  Without his guidance, the...

Despite the devastating wild fires this summer, the Poudre Canyon is still one of my favorite places to get away. There are many areas along the river that were spared, while others not so much. Travel past Pingree Park road and everything is the way it has been, save the fever people. Some of the closer and easier to get to destinations, Greyrock, Young Gultch, Hewlett Gulch... are closed for now, there is still plenty of great outdoor opportunities just a little further up.

very nice experience, nice place to fish, go further up the road for good camp sites, if you keep driving you can avoid the RV & Tent sites and just go straight to the tent camping. I think i had my rod in the water and i caught a brown trout in under 5 min. he was about 14IN.Deff a nice place to go camping. the scenic drive once you hit the canyon is great. Also if you are clever enough to find them, there are caves and mines all over the area according to the clerk at the general store, that is if you are up for that sort of thing

Awesome scenery great place to go rafting. Be aware of rough conditions when tubing in late spring or early summer as the river can be downright deadly!
