This section of the AT takes you up and over Brush Mtn.  There is a bit of WWII history on this mountain.  The most decorated soldier of WWII was Audie Murphy, included in his awards were the Silver Star and Medal of Honor.  He died in 1971 when his private plane crashed into this mountain.  There is now a monument on the top of the mountain in his memory.  It is no...

The Appalachian Trail ascends to the spine of Brush Mountain through this new wilderness area at both ends and then skirts it along the Brush Mountain ridge. The trail has interesting geography, particularly as it ascends from Craig Creek Valley to the south end of the Wilderness Area. It's a strenuous but pleasant walk ascending 1500 feet from the valley - trail builders have kept the grade moderate and steady using switchbacks rather than powering straight up the spur ridge. The Audie Murphy Memorial monument is the destination landmark atop the ridge. It is outside the Wilderness Area, but adds depth to the experience.
