The pup had fun with log crossings on trail and log walking at the lake. Wet spring may have washed one of the crossing logs out. Still nothing too tricky.Don't bother with the huckleberries. There's probably none left.
We packed in on horseback from the head of Hungry Horse Reservoir to Salmon Forks on the South Fork of the Flathead Rive. The ride in was 20 miles and 7.5 hours... after a 2 hr. car ride on gravel road along the Hungry Horse Reservoir. We stayed the Salmon Forks meadow area for a week of fishing and hiking. We took this trip with Salmon Forks Outfitters, a great organization.
Our trailhead is our horse camp, 20 miles in. From this camp we did a nice hike to a restored fire lookout station. I only included one way track as this is an out and back hike.
snow conditions not good for the rock steps on upper ridge. So we stopped and headed down for good turns. Couldn't do this trip in a day w/o sleds. The gps route starts where we put on skis.
Wanted to scramble the south peak of Mt Calowahcan by this trail. It rained in valley all night and there was no visibility so we opted for a hike instead. Snow ankle to calf deep.Waypoint at 5760 was snow line. Waypoint at 6880 would be likely place to leave trail for the peak.
Looking for a trail run with good elevation gain. Didn't connect the loop to Saphire lake. Too much snow for tennies above 6000 ft. Crossed three avalanche chutes with snow and debris covering the trail off Carmine Pk.Trail sign indicating 7 miles to Upper Holland Lake appears wrong.
Really felt good & strong. Went slowly, Tried to keep HR 120-125. Long climbs HR peaking & 155. steepest part had to stop once & walk to flat to start. Felt good at end of ride.
