30 miles from the terminus of the Appalachian trail, (at Springer Mountain) Blood Mountain is the second highest peak in GA, and the highest in GA on the appalachian trail at 4,459 ft. By the time through hikers reach Neel's Gap 2.2 miles from the peak, they are ready to shed some gear. The Walasi-Yi inn is a great hostel with nice folks and a great store for everything hikers need.
Blood mountain has a famous rock and wood shelter/cabin that was built by the CCC in the 1930s. It is two rooms, but is notorious for mice and a skunk. Picnic rock, just above the cabin is a great place to eat lunch or dry out your gear in the sun.
Nearby Vogel State Park, and Lake Winfield Scott are great recreation/camping areas.
Blood Mountain and Slaughter Gap are named after a native american battle (pre-white settlers)...that was so vicious, the mountain ran red with blood. (or so the story and history marker goes)

Dockery
Lake State Park
is a beautiful camping and fishing location.
I can’t say enough positive about how beautiful and perfect this park is
for camping. The entrance road is very
steep and dramatic, and really sets the stage for the beauty of the park. We started the trip by staying the first
night at the park, which is required—you can’t set up a camp and then head out
on the trail. We brought a canoe and
were able...
We met a friend at Lake Winfield Scott and rode in one car to the Woody Gap starting point, then at the end, used the other car to get us back to all our own vehicles. This shuttle allowed us to cover a longer section than we had time for otherwise. This is great for day-hikers with only a little experience. This track gives you 5.9 miles of the Appalachian trail, followed by...
After having riden my bike past Lake Winfield Scott many times, I decided to try hiking in the area. There are two access trails for the Appalachian Trail that depart from the lake. My initial plan was to hike up one, across the AT, and back down the other. I ran out of time that day and only had time to go up/dn Jarrard Gap. It's a nice trail, and I look...
I went hiking with the family this weekend, and met up with some other friends. We were looking for a nice hike, that was easy enough for a couple of 2.5 year olds, and had a waterfall at the end. DeSoto Falls fit the bill perfectly. We had a nice picnic lunch, then enjoyed a leasurely hike in, and the waterfall at the end was nice. There was really only a...
