SAFETY TIPS - Bike riding is fun and safe way to explore San Francisco providing you take an appropriate level of care. We present some key safety tips to help you stay safe:

· Always wear a helmet (it’s the law for under 18s)
· Obey traffic controls and signs (yes - that means stop signs!)
· Do not use cellphones, smartphones or wear earphones when riding.
· Ride your bicycle near the right-hand edge of the road.
· Never carry another person on your bicycle.
· Always use hand signals when turning or stopping.
· Look out for cars at cross street, driveways, and parking places.
· Keep a clear distance when passing parked cars and remain vigilant for opening car doors.
· Be careful when checking traffic and don't swerve when looking over your shoulder.
· Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
· Always ride carefully.
· On roadways, travel in the direction of moving traffic and not against it.
· Never ride a bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
· Cross streetcar and cablecar tracks at right-angles.
· Know your cycling abilities and operate within them.
· Remember to take a break from cycling from time-to-time, particularly if you’re feeling any physical discomfort.
· During darkness hours all bicycles must be equipped with a front-facing lamp and a red reflector on the rear.
