Sunday Bay Chickee Everglades

Awesome!!This was a fulfillment of a 5+ year goal.  Being totally surrounded by water while camping on an elevate wood platform in the middle of nowhere was amazing.  Sunday Bay Chickee is the closest Chickee to the Gulf Coast Welcome center in the Everglades.  Something like 6/7 miles in/out didn't seem like a huge task but there are tides to think about down here. Also, there was a lot of big water which was challenging when...

This elevated boardwalk takes you through prairie, dwarf cypress and into the heart of a cypress strand. Look for alligators, wading birds and a variety of migrating songbirds. Located west of the Oasis Visitor Center along US 41 (Tamiami Trail).

There is a tower in the center of the park and a longer loop that goes around that I did not mark here. I used the waypoint to show you where you exit from the longer hike, there is a tall gate there. I only marked the shorter paved walking path. The longer one has nice foliage, then a sweeping view, switching to dry scrubland, it was an exciting hike.

So small confession... these pics were taken the morning after and there were pills involved such as Advil!Monument Lake was a great place to spend the night.  The grounds are totally primitive except for a bathroom. The exterior cold shower was being worked on.  RV's do take up a majority portion around the park but they are on their own as well. No water, no power.  The best you get is a pass to use...

This is the track of a little hike we took trying to locate the East Hinson Indian Mounds. We got to the exact coordinates where they should have been, but didn't find them. Of course the jungle was pretty thick in there, like a rain forest. We did find a wild grapefruit tree that had some delicious fruit on it.
