Summary:  Solo summit of Elephant Tusk via the Dodson Trail.Route:  In at Blue Creek Overlook, east on the Dodson Trail, south on the Elephant Tusk Trail, up Elephant Tusk, and back out the way I went it.Details:  This was a two-day solo hike at the end of April 2010.  The weather was warm but not too hot yet; the highs were in the 90s.  But the sun was relentless; there is no shade...

This was a solo trip, because Mike didn't want to go, or didn't think he could make it.I didn't see many people, or any animals, so it was nice and quiet... sort of creepy.Took a 45 min siesta on the south rim. I propped my self up on a rock, fairly close to the ledge.  I would open my eyes and just see for maybe a hundred miles or so.

Nice high desert day hike or horseback ride on an old ore road. Steady gain with fine views of dark canyons and the Chisos, nearly all of BBNP and Mexico. Lovely birding basin 3/4 to summit .Antennas on summit. No water, scant shade. This is a much better approach than the southern route from BBNP which intersects at the basin. Great hike for first day acclimation and reconnoitering the park.Trail head is 20...

2 day South Rim Trail via Pinnacles Trail

I don't have a GPS so I found a gpx file that was similar to the trip a friend of mine and I took on our backpacking trip in Big Bend National Park. We started by heading up Pinnacles Trail which is steep and difficult. We then cut across to where Laguna Meadows Trail meets the South Rim Trail and took the South Rim Trail to our primitive campsite. The next day...

I was here for work as myself and a coworker were assisting with some fuel reduction (brush cutting) at Panther Junction. We finished up a little early one day and thought this would make for a good hike. He has been here many times, but this was my first visit to Big Bend and the first hike I did here in the park.It was a typical hot, May afternoon, but not unbearable....

Take your time and plan thoroughly! We watched the weather for weeks leading into our trip and still we were caught by surprise! expect the unexpected. Also keep kiddos close by- very close! Their was a mountain lion attack on a small child on our second to last day there which left him severely injured in the Chisos Basin parking lot. Also if you plan to get out to the Rim plan about 4-6 hours and pack plenty of water.

The terrain is tough and rugged but the views, especially on the South Rim, are absolutely breath-taking. It's a tough hike and the ground can be very unforgiving on your feet but the payoff is well worth it. It's Texas, wild and untouched.

This was a fantastic hike. The Pinnacles Trail was pretty strenuous but the pay off was well worth it.

We decide to spend couple of nights in the Chisos Basin in the Big Bend National Park. It takes us almost 2 days to get here and we are not leaving without having a closer look. The park stretches from Rio Grande north. There is a desert here, but there are also very picturesque mountains. Chisos Range is the highest and the most beautiful. And since the park was created by the CCC it's all about public access: there is a road leading to the basin, a hotel and some cabins. The lack of the Internet is more than made up by the sunsets views and night sky full of blinking stars. We try to sleep with our windows open but unfortunately some people insist on using AC despite the fact that we are over 5500 feet above the sea level and temperature drops comfortably at night. I suspect many guests have absolutely no idea that one can open a window: http://blog.furkot.com/2010/08/chisos.html

What I most remember: the complete silence on some viewpoints. It was also weird to stand right across the Mexican border (Rio Grande).
