Wilderness areas by definition are federal lands that are free from human control. The Ashdown Gorge Wilderness area, unlike other areas in Southern Utah, has never been used for the grazing of cattle or sheep. The "relic vegetation" that exists in this remote area predate the pioneers that settled the region thereby creating a unique research opportunity. To venture into Ashdown Gorge is to venture into an area involving the most primitive type of recreation. The wilderness areas that make up part of the Dixie National Forest are rugged and due to the remote nature of Ashdown Gorge should only be entered by seasoned and experienced hikers and backpackers.

Just north of the Cedar Breaks National Monument boundary is the
trailhead for Rattlesnake Trail. A 4 mile (one way)3,200 foot decent
