Telescope Peak from Throndike in April
by AllenRbrts on Apr 07, 2009
Panamint, California, United States
13.2 miles
Spring hike up Telescope peak. Started at Throndike because road up to Mahogany Flat was closed due to snow. Put on crampons for the final 2 miles due to snow and ice. Got to the summit for a wonderful view of the Sierras, White Mountains, Badwater and Mt Charleston (near Las Vegas).Pretty chilly at the top, 29 degreees and wind gusting to 40mph.

Zinc Hill

Zinc Hill is the northern high point in the Argus Range. Most of the peaks in this range are inaccessible due to their location on China Lake NWC but this one is a good hike and has a nice view into Panamint Valley and across to Telescope Peak. This, like most desert peaks, is a cross country hike that requires good routefinding skills. Our route up was straightforward but steep. On the hike...

Lookout City and Defense Mine
by calipidder on Nov 27, 2010
Lookout City (historical), California, United States
7.9 miles
An awesome hike in the desert past old mining ruins, up a wonderfully engineered old use trail built by the Chinese mine workers, side trip to tag a peak, and a visit to the Defense Mine on the decent.Partially cross-country route finding, partially on old trail (hardest part is finding it from the bottom), partially on 4WD road. Much of the route could be driven with a well equipped vehicle (class II...
Telescope and Bennett Peaks - Death Valley National Park
by MHorbal on May 09, 2008
Panamint, California, United States
13.9 miles
A hike up Death Valley NP's highest point, with a side trip up Bennett Peak on the descent. With a 4WD not a rental Cobalt you could shave a couple miles off this trail by starting from Mahogany Flats, instead of 1 mile and 1,000 ft short.

Day 1 of 9: Thanksgiving 2009 Desert Road TripFossil Falls is only a short hop off of 395 and has a large nice parking area and BLM campground with basic features. We drove out from the Bay Area late on Friday night and found a campsite in the empty campground around 10 pm. Set up, had a beer, and enjoyed the beautiful starry sky. In the morning we awoke to a lava...
