Two Himalayan base camp hopefuls and two casual (but serious) hikers got together to scale Mount Dana on Sunday Sept 14, 2008.We camped in style at the Tuolomne Lodge, drove up to Tioga Pass and head out just before 8 am. Going up is tough - there are no switch backs - and the last mile after the grand cairn is jagged rock. There are two faint trails - the north track...
An excellent leg of the famous JMT, over Donohue pass, through Thousand Island Lake and Shadow Lake, and ending at Red's Meadow.

My buddy Brandon Mitchell and I hiked 39 miles of the John
Muir Trail from Tuolumne Meadows Permit Station to the Devil's Postpile in
Mammoth Lakes. Both with ~45lb packs.
Day1: 10 miles
We hiked through Lyell Canyon and camped at the base of Donahue Pass. There was
little elevation gain on this day. Had lunch on the river. The
water was so clear in the river...wanted to jump in on several occasions.
Saw a sweet waterfall coming off the...
Although I had heard about Yosemite's High Sierra Camps (HSC),
I had never been to one. A couple months
back, I made a reservation for Vogelsang HSC for Sept 6th, the last
night of their 2008 season. The weather turned out to be perfect, cool and sunny.
Day 1 – To Vogelsang - I started the hike at 9:15 am from the backpackers car park before Tuolumne
Meadows Lodge. Vogelsang can be
reached via Rafferty Creak trail (6...
A wonderful weekend excursion to the High Sierra. (I didn't own a GPS then, so the track line is approximated.)I had always wanted to re-visit Thousand Island Lake after a stopover on the Muir Trail but the most obvious route there always seemed to be via Agnew Meadows, which is really a 3-day trip, and 3 days together was hard to find. Then one day I looked at the map and went...
This was the first full day of our little trip in the Eastern Sierras, and I was set on making the most of it considering the limited amount of time I had. We (me and the dog) set out from our campsite at Silver Lake right after breakfast with a plan to hike up toward Thousand Island Lake, not sure if we'd make it that far or not. That would have been...
This backpacking trip in the Ansel Adams and John Muir
Wilderness will rank high on my list of backpacking trips. On this trip,
we enjoyed walking through dense forests, across and along streams, along lakes, through meadows, up mountain passes lined with boulders and high
granite peaks, etc. We experienced cloudy skies, clear blue skies, high
winds, still nights, and frozen water bottles on the last morning.
Day 1 – Walk in - Lake Thomas
Edison to Graveyard
Lake. ...
My highest hike yet! I made to the summit of Mt Dana at 13,000 ft. The last 1000 ft has almost no trail to speak of, so it's a scramble through the rocks, taking a lot of energy, and making breathing that much more difficult. The views at the top were priceless!Full trip story at:http://tmeekins.blogspot.com/2011/08/mt-dana-aug-26-2011.html
The Yosemite High Country in July... creeks full of snowmelt, meadows full of flowers, mosquitos full of blood. This hike is remarkably gentle and relatively easy for all that it climbs high into the high country. Of course, the presence of one of the High Sierra Camps (hotels in the backcountry) should tell you that. It goes "up" Lyell Canyon (which is perhaps the flattest 6 miles I've hike anywhere), following the...
