This was a beautiful late fall hike to Kendall Katwalk trail, which is part of Pacific Crest Trail. The trail head is at Snoqualmie pass.
We're two California Natives moved to Seattle in 2006 and only now scraping gear together to get out and about. This hike was a get-reacquainted-with-hiking trip for us, and though we didn't get all that far without proper backpacking gear, the Alpine Lakes area is wonderfully accessible, but feels quite remote.
We hiked up to Olallie and dropped off our gear, then hiked over to Island Lake. I jumped in for a good two minutes, then sat in the sun on a rock for a while. It was gorgeous there. The campsite at Olallie was in good shape, and the bugs were only slightly annoying.
It was a lovely day for a snowshoe adventure. There were a lot of sun breaks, and the air was incredibly clear. We hiked up near chair peak, then turned around and had lunch at the ridge overlooking Snow Lake. On the way back, we took a shortcut by sledding down the hillside on our asses. Super fun.
James, Boo and I hiked up Heather Ridge and made several sweet turns down Moonlight Bowl. Super trip. Perfect snow at the upper elevations. Lots of whoomp...whomph... all around but nothing sliding anywhere. Just go be sure though, We stayed in relatively safe terrain and enjoyed some good conditions. Good snow at the higher elevations. 2+feet over a pretty solid hardpack with another weak layer about 10-12 inches...
