4 day solo kayaking trip in Algonquin Park, Fall 2008.Opeongo-Proulx-Crow-Lavieille-Dickson-Opeongo lakesI camped at Crow Lake, Lavieille, and at the end of the long portage in the East arm of Opeongo. The meandering Crow river is very beautiful.  The firetower on Crow lake is cool to check out, along with the trail to the virgin pine stand at the portage on Crow Lake.I didn't get to enjoy Lake Lavielle much unfortunately, it was raining...

Algonquin Park - Highlands Backpacking Trail, Loop 1
by mcf on Feb 19, 2009
Algonquin Park East, Ontario, Canada
10.6 miles
Had decent temperatures today ranging from -10 degrees C when I set out on in the morning up to -2 degrees in mid-day, and back down again to -12 by the time I finished.   It was a bit breezy, but wind chill was a factor only while up on a couple of ridges and along some shorelines.  This is actually considered a backpacking trail with two possible loops.  The shorter Loop...

Algonquin Park Western Uplands Trail Second Loop
by boothash on Oct 18, 2008

3 day solo trip on the Western Uplands Trail in Algonquin Park.  Not a particularly scenic trail, but a nice hike though western Algonquin Park.  Moderately strenuous with many ups and downs but no beautiful vistas from mountain tops to behold...  many scenic lakes and some good campsites to check out, however.I saw a moose couple on the trail and found an old rusty machete in a hollow log at one of...

Algonquin Park - Mizzy Lake Trail
by mcf on Feb 18, 2009
Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
7.0 miles
It was almost perfect weather for a winter hike with temperatures just below freezing and very little wind.  I was able to do without gloves and head covering for much of the hike and actually worked up a bit of a sweat by the end of it.The Mizzy Lake trail is billed as a fairly long hike offering several opportunities to observe Algonquin's wildlife in different types of natural habitats ranging from...

Algonquin Park - Rain L. - White Trout L. Loop
by horschtof on Sep 12, 2008
Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
60.6 miles
This particular trip could be done any where from three to seven days depending on how fast you want to go.  We chose to enjoy ourselves, and spent the middle of this trip moving steadily without hurry. We expected to see most of our wildlife in the Grassy Bay coming off of the Petawawa into White Trout L. or on Otterslide Creek but it wasn't until the narrows between Otterslide L. and Little Otterslide did we see our first...

Brent Crater Trail
by m_stiell on Oct 16, 2009
Mattawa, Ontario, Canada
1.9 miles
An excellent self guided interpretive hiking trail in Ontarios Algonquin Park. The trail descends down into the crater created by a meteorite thousands of years ago. Trailhead is on Brent Road near the town of Deux Riviere 30min from Mattawa Ontario. Grab a interpretive booklet at the park office on Brent Rd, or at the trailhead. Good parking spaces off the road, hike took about an hour. 2 lookouts, one is the...

Booth's Rock Trail, Algonquin Provinical Park
by philipc on Sep 25, 2011
Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
3.6 miles
The last weekend of Sept is usually the peak of the fall colour in Algonquin Park. We were there on Sunday Sept 25, just a day before the park officially declared the colour at ‘peak’. Having hiked most of the trails along the Highway 60 corridor, it is about time to finish the few remaining day hike trails.  The Booth’s Rock Trail remains one of the few left for me. It didn’t take too...

Algonquin Park - Mew Lake Campgrounds to Track & Tower Trail, and back again
by mcf on Feb 17, 2009
Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada
12.4 miles
Nice day, with the sky bright and sunny to start, temperatures just a couple of degrees below freezing, and almost no wind to speak of.   I got off to an "early" 10:00am start from my camping site at Mew Lake campground. The Track & Tower trail is one of my favourite Algonquin day trails.  This 7.7 km loop combines glimpses of Algonquin's human past together with cascading waters and scenic views.  I make...

Park is moderately busy this time of year, just ramping up for the masses of people in July and August. Temperatures are great, but bugs are insane, mosquitos and blackflies mainly - bring a bug jacket.
Buying firewood from the park is disappointing - wet and bags were 2/3 full. Achray - make sure you go your canoe rented before you head into the park, otherwise it's a long way back to the beginning of the dirt road to get one near Petawawa.

Algonquin is a very picturesque place, with so many lakes and canoe routes. Also lots of camp grounds for car camping as well but best to go on a canoe. After a few portages, it becomes very quiet. The only problem with back country camping is it's getting quite expensive ($11.25/person/night).
