Green Mountain Trail, Kawuneeche Valley, RMNP

Gaskil, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 4.1 miles
Snowshoeing | 4.1 miles
Another easy snowshoe in RMNP, trail-head well marked. Final destination was the Big Meadows, fed by the Tonahutu Creek. The elk were in the low-country, so all we saw was a lot of moose tracks. And plenty of snow.Never did find the 2 cabins remains at the Big Meadows. Probably didn't go far enough.
Our goal was to reach Lake Helene, a short easy hike normally. But under the conditions, we opted to turn around at the near side of Two Rivers Lake. The wind was ferocious.
Hidden Valley Loop, Trail Ridge Rd, RMNP

Hidden Valley, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 5.3 miles
Snowshoeing | 5.3 miles
Hidden Valley is an old lift-operated downhill ski resort (Ski Estes Park) that operated between 1955 - 1991 along U.S. 34, five miles (8 km) west of Estes Park. It was the trailhead for our snowshoe to Rainbow Curve, a pullout along Trail Ridge Rd (US-34) with rewarding views of the Mummy Range. We chose to make a loop out of the hike, ascending one ski run, and descending another. Unfortunately, the weather was...
Emerald Lake, RMNP Snowshoe
Fall River Estates Subdivision, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 3.5 miles
Snowshoeing | 3.5 miles
Easy 5-1/2 mi snowshoe to the Colorado Mountain Club's (CMC) Boulder Group, Brainard Hut. Offers a great view of the Indian Peaks, including Mt Audubon (13,223'), which we climbed twice later in the year.Details on the CMC hut can be found at this link.
CHERYL HAD THE DAY OFF. SO WENT UP TO BRAINARD LAKE AREA TO DO A DAY OF SNOWSHOEING. FANTASTIC DAY, WE HAD JUST HAD ABOUT TWO FEET OF SNOW FROM LAST WEEKEND. NOT A CLOUD IN THE SKY.KIM
We did not expect this much of snow!First, good pace till Brainard lake and it was all frozen, so we walked on the lake but the end we missed an exit from lake back to street so that we could get to the Michael lake trail head. We had to go very deep snow in woods. When we saw the trail head, my wife was pleasantly surprised because there was not foot print but...
Mt. Orton is only a minor peak in RMNP; so why climb it? It is on the North Ridge massive of Chiefs Head, the 3rd highest peak in RMNP. The summit of Mt. Orton offers a commanding view of the Continental Divide, and many of the major peaks in the area, such as Longs and Meeker. Our goal was to snowshoe and climb Mt Orton (11,724') from the Wild Basin TH (8,480'), bushwhacking...

Snowshoeing to Mills Lake. Notice the tracks walking directly over the frozen water.
East & West Glacier Knobs via Glacier Gorge TH
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 4.7 miles
Snowshoeing | 4.7 miles
The Glacier Knobs make an interesting, non-technical climb in the winter, particularily if you access the low elevation nubs by the little used "Secret" trail. The Secret trail is a little known fire trail, used by RMNP personnel to access the park interior quickly. The fire trail is about 100' above the the winter trail, following the Lock Vale stream. The East Glacier Knob is fully visible from the Glacier Gorge TH, and it's...
Embryo Lake (10,380'), NADP Project Site, RMNP
Beaver Point, Colorado, United States
Snowshoeing | 6.2 miles
Snowshoeing | 6.2 miles
Embryo Lake is an interesting side destination, if you happen to be hiking up to Sky Pond or The Loch. Just about 200' N and NW of Embryo Lake, you'll see a meteorological tower and a water sample collection site, referred to as the Loch Vale National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) or Loch Vale Watershed Research Project. The purpose of the project is to study the long-term effects of global warming...
Only 50 minutes west of Denver about 10 minutes east of Georgetown. I like this trail a lot during the winter because there is very light traffic. On average I only see about 2 groups of people on these trails. It gets a good amount of snow during January and February. I like to snow shoe on these trails I have tried cross country on these trails but I fell on my...
This is an easy hike on a Forest Service road to an old fire tower.
