We parked at the dirt parking lot at the end of the improved road. If your vehicle has sufficient ground clearance you can attempt to drive to N 21° 34.533 W 158° 16.254. I'd recommend a 4x4 but not absolutely required. I would not attempt this road during rainy conditions. There were obvious signs of deep mud puddles.
My whole family joined me on this hike, and the wailing and moaning and gnashing of teeth was surprisingly minimal!! We all slipped and slided our way in the mud the whole way and found all three caches along the route. The highlights are the views of the Napali Coast and Hanalei Bay from the top of the volcano as well as cooling off in the Kawaikoa Stream at the low point...

A three day hike we took along the Na Pali Coast on Kauai. A permit is required beyond the 2 mile mark on this trail, and can be obtained from the Hawaii State Park website.
