"Threading the Needle" at Mt Bachelor
by was on Apr 04, 2009
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 48 miles
24" of snow the week prior. Skied with friends Hank and Jeff for part of the day. Had some great off-piste runs, including hitting ~all of the 360o catchline road ("the eye") and dropping into the cirque thru the pinnacles ("threading"). Doing both in one day is what is called "threading the needle."Had one run with a manager at Mt Bachelor. Bert? Anyway he was a good skier and had a great run and...

Best day so far this year (ha ha)
by was on Jan 02, 2010
Bend, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 39 miles
2" of snow the night prior with storms expected to clear by the end of the day. Rime ice at higher elevations was keeping the summit and west-side lifts closed, so spend the majority of morning on Rainbow lift. After a late lunch discovered the west-side lifts were open. Had a few great runs over there. Operators were nice enough to give the benefit of the doubt on closing time and so got...

Skiing at Mt Bachelor
by was on Apr 11, 2008
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 38 miles
A great day. Mt Bachelor has about 3500 vertical feet in a ski area that covers an entire mountain. This day I skied mostly expert runs to avoid people. Hiked to the summit and skied over the backside. A couple of these pics were taken on days other than the one I skied, just to give a better flavor.

Gummi Bears: 56,226 vertical
by was on Feb 22, 2010
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 78 miles
Around this time of year I usually go for one day a mega vertical. Wasn't planning on doing it today, but as I was skiing alone, midweek, on fast snow, and I was feeling strong, I went for it. Luckily I had sharpened edges and waxed in the morning. Hasn't been any new snow in a while, so kinda hardpack everywhere. Started off on Summit chair with several laps. At 10:30 I had a...

Mt Bachelor Backside Skig@sm
by was on Feb 25, 2010
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 48 miles
This was a great day. About 20" of snow and beautiful sunshine. By far one of the best days of the year. After some early fresh tracks under Red Chair and Northwest Express trees went for the rest of the day on Backside loops.  Mount Bachelor backside is completely expert terrain. See link below. There are warnings "Do not ski this area alone" - it is remote and vast.Top to bottom is it...

"X" marks the spot
by was on Feb 27, 2010
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 32 miles
Made an"X" off the summit of Mt Bachelor!Day previous had been very stormy - 30-40mph winds with gusts to 50+. Forecast was for cloudy conditions, but drive up proved differently. One of the great things about the east Cascades - weather is unpredictable because it sits on the border of ocean and desert influences. I skied up to the summit immediately andwent off the backside to look for some stashes of fresh...

Perfect Day at SkiBowl

Alpine skiing | 11.8 miles
Crazy logistics day, but the snow and the scenery at Skibowl were perfect. Didnt make too many runs due to time constraints, but still definitely worth it.

Powder Skiing at Timberline
by skicavs on Dec 22, 2009
Government Camp, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 43 miles
After a dumping of snow (14 inches maybe) we decided to go skiing at Timberline. The weather was looking good, and the temperature was well under-freezing (we think low 20's, but it was as cold as I ever recalll skiing, taking my glove off for 30 seconds hurt alot)It wasn't too windy, just cold. We managed to crank through alot of runs because the snow was nearly perfect and the terrain was...

Powder Day
by was on Dec 30, 2009
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 77 miles
Foot of new snow. We got a late start that morning since kids wanted some vacation from their vacation. Bachelor has a dedicated local crowd and by the time we got to the mountain very few virgin tracks left. Still a great day. After some early runs and Rainbow headed to NWX for drops down more challenging runs. My legs were tired (third day in a row skiing). After lunch it had stopped snowing...

Last day of the ski season. Plenty of snow. Great conditions. Only enough skiers to keep three lifts open. Mt Bachelor is open till May 16 this year, but I will be traveling next weekend so this was it for me. A great season...

Great day at Mt Bachelor
by was on Dec 19, 2010

Alpine skiing | 27 miles
Been a while since I posted.... thought I would update with this ski trip. We're having a great season up here in the PNW this year, with the snow base already ~ 2 meters. That's a lot of snow for this time of year! This was my third day out this year and the first for my daughter. We stuck mostly to easier runs to keep it sane for the legs. In the morning...

Skiing at Hoodoo: Steep, Deep, and Cheap
by was on Jan 10, 2009
Sisters, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 28 miles
Hoodoo is one of those great local areas that get no major press but are the backbone of the ski industry. About a 20 mile drive from Sisters, it typically draws families and hardcores. What to expect: reasonable lift ticket prices, little to no lines at lifts, nice lodge and facilities, great balance of advanced to beginner runs, friendly attitude, and great views (on days when the weather is clear). Not not to expect:...

Skiing Bachelor on a Sunny Friday
by was on Jan 16, 2009
Bend, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 39 miles
My daughter and I have a tradition of taking a 1/1 ski weekend together  during her winter break from college. Jan can be a rough month for weather, but this year we had beautiful weather...and crappy snow. Temperatures were in the 50's by the end of the day. We hit all of the open lifts on the mountain. We had a three-state view. Mt Adams (Washington) to the north. To the east the Wallowa...

Skiing with Sam

Alpine skiing | 26 miles
My son Sam and I spent the third day of our spring break ski-trip skiing together for most of the day. We had almost perfect conditions. Great fresh snow. Good weather. No crowds.Day consisted of a lot of "extra-curricular" stuff: climbing the cinder cone, skiing the cirque, and head west from NWX for some off-piste skiing. Spending a whole day together doing something we both love is a gift. As your kids get older it...

Mashed Potatoes
by was on Jan 16, 2010
Elk Lake, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 27 miles
El Nino brought us several inches of mashed potatoes (also known as Cascade cement) overnight. Generally Mt Hood and Crystal are better known for this kind of ....errrrr.... snow. But on this day we had it at Bachy. Got up to the mountain early and on first ride up met Kevin. We were both talking the talk, and as we left Pine for Northwest he said, see you at the bottom. I'm sure...
