HHS is one of the best, most reliable, places for cross-country skiing in Western NY. Overlooking Honeyoye Lake, it gets and retains snow better than many other spots in the Rochester-Buffalo area. It's used by local schools for training and races; some trails are groomed. Cross-country skiers are often joined by snowshoers and even mushers. We got a bit of snow over the night of the 12th, giving about four inches of fresh...

XC-Ski Brookhaven Golfcourse

Cross-country skiing | 6.1 miles
Cross Country Skiing at Brookhaven Golf Course in South Corinth, NY. This map  shows my treks on the longer trails. There are 8 trails, some in the woods to ski/snowshoe. All are colour coded and there are trail maps on the trail. I've only longed some of the longer ones.  Yellow trail is 3 miles and is your traditional golf course trail. Long runs on more level ground and nice big glides on the hills.  Blue is...

Pineridge Cross-Country Ski Area
by AnArcticPuffin on Jan 10, 2009

Cross-country skiing | 6.5 miles
This was my first try at cross country skiing and I'm pretty sure I'm hooked now.  Pineridge is a great place with tons of pine trees and plenty of  varied terrain.  The lodge was super rustic and the staff were very friendly.  It was a place you where one could really feal at home.  The ski rental quality was also very good.  I'd highly recommend it.

Powder Mills Park is a popular spot in suburban Rochester for hiking and  fishing in the Spring-Summer-Fall, and--in Winter--for hiking, snowshoeing, sledding, and...skiing. People come for Downhill (on a really tiny slope with a rope tow), cross-country, and even backcountry skiing.

A companion to the trip made a week prior, this time the conditions and the light were different. The area had had a bout with freezing rain (though the temps were 21°F!) the night before, so there was a bit of crust with the 9" of powder. That made for a challenge in the less traveled trails, but it allowed for some nice shots of ice and snow on the trees.

Cross-country skiing | 5.8 miles
Mendon Ponds Park is another popular cross-country skiing locale for locals. It's used for cross-country races and training. On this day, I took the East Esker Trail loop, which has a few hills that make it one of the more challenging trails in the system.

Update: I went back on Jan. 31, with the camera. The temps were in the low teens, with a strong wind and a wind-chill of ~0°F. Lots of skiers were out, despite the early hour. The track was in excellent condition. This trail, which follows the mostly-flat contours of Quaker Pond, is a lot easier than the East Esker Trail. On this day, the conditions were perfect: ~20°F and sunny, with 4" of...

Dan's goal is to xc ski all the parks in Monroe this year, so we left work a bit early and headed to Ellison before the sun set. I forgot to ask how many more he has to go. I think it's many more. The snow was deep and fresh.

Cross-country skiing | 5.7 miles
Perfect morning watching the sun rise and the deer wake. The track is now icy, but the overnight fresh fallen snow provided a great opportunity for gliding. I was the first one out this morning, but it wasn't that long before fellow skiers shared the morning scape.

Amazing! xc skiing in Webster Park on the best winter day
by kona on Feb 06, 2009
Forest Lawn, New York, United States
Cross-country skiing | 2.2 miles
I lost the signal at the start of the trip. Sure felt like we traversed more than 2.2 miles, especially when we got a bit turned around there at the end. IDEAL day! The sun was shining, the air was crisp. Who could ask for anything more than that. Skiing in the back woods of webster park. What a fun lunch hour. As Dan said today to the other skiiers on the trail,...

Easy and flat!Today I did a full circle around Square Pond on cross-country skiis.  A couple challenges:a.  Very little snow - so I couldn't get my poles in very deep to get a good glideb.  Unbelievably, at about 1/2 through a snow plow came through and flattened any snow I hadIf there was a decent amount of snow, this would have been a lovely flat ski trip with the pond in view...
