I just received the new Tenth Edition Trail maps and decided to use it to do a new hike. This route was just OK. The bridge was washed away so the first stream crossing was really tricky and almost decided to not do it and go back to the Jeep and do a different hike but Peter talked me through. The views indicated on the map are limited. However this hike had...
The plan was originally to loop north through the Long Pond Iron Works (LPIW) on the Hasenclever Iron trail, but we found out the bridge over the Wanaque river is still out back from Hurricane Irene. So, we went and checked out the falls and then doubled back for a loop around Monksville Reservoir to the south instead. This involved taking the Hewitt-Butler (blue) and Highlands (teal) near the LPIW on Greenwood...
65+ degrees, cool breeze, Fall colors, wildlife and mountain biking. What more could I ask for? Maybe a cheeseburger to be waiting for me at the car at the end of the ride. HA!
Surprise Lake and Greenwood Lake Views from Warwick Turnpike

I have done variation of this loop many times and it is always good. The extra trek out to the Greenwood LAke view is worth the extra mileage and effort. There is an initial steep ascent and the slight up and down, up and down along the ridge. We made really good time along the orange blazed Quail Trail on our way back. Recent heavy rains made for some localized flooding and...
It was hot, muggy and buggy. But it was still some FINE riding. Wawayanda is one of my favorite places. It has tons of single track threading between the marked trails. Got a flat and glad I checked the source as the thorn was still in the tire and would've punctured the new tube had I not found it.
Pounding out some single-track in the southern part of Wawayanda. Came across mama bear and a couple of cubs. Got a long distance picture of 1 cub up in the tree before I decided to turn back and give them their space. As a result I found a trail I had not been on before running between Old Coal and Lookout Lake. I also came across a large snapping turtle in the...
On leaving New Jersey
Thursday, May 10, 2012: It was a 9-day state, and the north half was
some of the most fun hiking I've had, because of the constant variety -
something new and different every mile or two.
In the morning I hiked a leg through Wawayanda State Park, where the trail takes you past this charming little lake.
Then the entry into New York state happens on a glacier scoured bedrock...
This was a real nice loop ride around Greenwood lake. The weather was beautiful. Not much traffic, especially on the east side. At the end of the ride, when East Shore road peels away from the lake it follows along a beautiful brook. Very scenic and therapeutic ride!
A afternoon paddle to look at the fall colors in Sussex county NJ. It was fairly windy so we had to stay along the one shoreline.
One of the nicest hikes in New Jersey. Beautiful Vistas over Greenwood Lake, NY. Lots of ridges to traverse, glacier erratics to climb, deep woods solitude, a beautiful, tranquil lake and even a pond too all make this a great hike.
Just replaced the rear tire 2 rides ago. Riding through a rock-garden and ripped the side wall. I won't be buying that brand any time soon. I fixed it temporarily by using a dollar bill inside the bead to keep the new tube from "bubbling" through the tire sidewall. I wasn't confident it was going to hold long. So, the ride was cut short. Had intentions of hitting a lot more. Anyway, route taken...
