Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 1
by belowthesurface on Feb 08, 2010
Naples (historical), Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 15.8 miles
Welcome to the Atchafalaya River Expedition, "Gaining Ground" tour. We begin at the confluence of two channels of the Old River Control Structure. The US Army Corps of Engineers gave Below the Surface and the rest of the crew a tour of this engineering marvel. Capable of carefully controlling flows from the Mississippi, which has a flow potential of 3 million cu ft/s. The first channel is a privately funded hydroelectric dam,...

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 6
by belowthesurface on Feb 13, 2010
Irish Bend, Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 13.3 miles
Today we saw the cypress groves in their winter majesty.  A truly majestic grove was marred by a 55-gallon plastic drum with a toxicity label floating in the midst of the trees.  We loaded it up on our canoe and took it to our campsite after getting some crawdads and beer with some help from some Cajun locals.

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 5
by belowthesurface on Feb 12, 2010
Bayou Chene, Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 31 miles
Day 5 on the paddleboard and Kristian Gustavson is still paddling strong, but the upright position leaves you more exposed to the elements.  Still made good distance, 30.5 miles total for Day 5.  It was cold with a solid tailwind and a nearly hypothermic mid-day restroom break.  Truly a moment of needing to press forward, there was no sitting still in these conditions, must move downstream.

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 4
by belowthesurface on Feb 11, 2010
Butte La Rose, Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 2.9 miles
Little Atchafalaya River was difficult to navigate with a 30-ft canoe due to the slalom like course through the downed trees.  Tensions were high and by lunch, Eco-Warrior James Pribram had mild hypothermia so we made a fire and had lunch before heading onward.

Kayaking / Canoeing | 0.0 miles
Starting from Bodcau Dam Rd, about 1/4 mile after the main Bodcau office- take a right onto the East Bodcau camping area, youll see a canoe dude on the sign. The launch is primitive, and it just looks like a small stream.. This, after the first bend- turns into a Bald Cypress paradise! Lots of fishing was going on as well. Very interesting trees and birds.

by belowthesurface on Feb 09, 2010
Legonier, Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 39 miles
Day 2 of the Gaining Ground Expedition began with a cold and windy entry at Simmesport.  Thunder and lightning from the night before nearly flattened the tents, but by morning we were ready to explore the river.  Living Lands and Waters was doing a cleanup at the campsite that morning and we were able to meet up with them for a little bit before heading out.

by belowthesurface on Feb 11, 2010
Rycade, Louisiana, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 8.9 miles
After regrouping with John Ruskey we were able to get back on the water and tough it out.  It was cold, wet and windy, the crews spirits were at a low, the water levels were high, and the light was waning.  We were in the middle of America's largest river swamp and we finally found a campsite that was 1 ft. above river level and hoped the waters didn't come up too...

The last day of the Expedition began with an amazing sunrise that was featured in the June/July table of contents of Reader's Digest.  The 30 ft cypress Junebug had done its job and safely taken its crew from the Old River Control Structure through America's largest river swamp and into Morgan City.
