One of the best year-end activities in Central Florida may be kayaking. Actually, you don't have to wait for the year to end to enjoy the sport - any day of the week will work just fine. But today was especially nice shared with a wonderful group of fellow paddlers. The day began with dense fog and little wind. The temperature surprisingly warm compared to days prior and with the 100% humidity...

I love it when a plan comes together - great weather, wonderful paddling companions and returning to the launch area with the in coming tide - doesn't get any better then this. And as an added bonus we paddled a good distance up Crawford Creek and trust me when I say, it was not without some challenges... there were very few places to get out and stretch your legs. there were signs...

Location: Homosassa FLLaunch Site: Public ramp at MacRae's marina and restaurant. Conditions: Slow moving spring-fed river, marsh. Watch out for oyster beds at low tide. When the tide is running out, you will have to paddle hard "uphill" against the outrushing water near Sam's Bayou Marsh (see waypoint). Use all waypoints for navigation...the channels can be confusing.Wildlife: Birds, dolphins, manateesHighlight: Monkey Island is unique, lots of wildlife, no power boats in the...
This race took 2 to 2.5 hours using al lkinds of canoes and kayaks
We had strong winds today and headed for the upper section of the river looking for some sheltered water. Had to stop and check out Monkey Island, not a common sight and very interesting. Moving on we explored a few small creeks before arriving at the Homosassa Wildlife Park. The waterway is restricted here and well marked, We would have loved to get closer - the area is beautiful but settled...

We put in at Riverside Resort but I didn't start tracking until we were at least 1 mile from the launch. Paddled a loop - through Riverhaven, Price Creek, and back to the Homosassa River. Highlights: pretty birds, beautiful flowers, something floating, omg it was a dead raccoon...crystal clear shallow water, 3 baby gators, wild Florida outback, and finished it off pushing ourselves through a culvert under Halls River Rd.
