Trips
The hiking, backpacking, fishing, moose and bear viewing, and camping up Long Draw Road have been a favorite of ours for years and now we can add skiing to that list. We parked at the Long Draw winter parking lot and stepped out into a brisk 15 degrees and likely much colder with the wind! We quickly warmed up though as we began to ski. On the way up, we crossed the...
Not sure I'd call this "cross-country" skiing, but it was a fun day in the snow, and our first XC-ski of the season. The snow depth at the Joe Wright SNOTEL monitoring site showed an official 47" of snowpack.Be prepared to share the "road" with snowmobiles. Once off the road, for example, the trail around Lost Lake, you'll only hear the whine of their engines.
For TJ's 31st birthday, we took a trip up the Poudre Canyon to the Cameron Pass Area. After leaving the Zimmerman Lake Trail to ski The Meadows, we briefly lost the trail markers and went through some deep snow. We quickly re-discovered the trail though and were rewarded with a beautiful trip! We turned around to return back to our vehicle, making it just short of Long Draw Road.
Just a short X-country ski up the 4WD No-Name Road, that ascends No-Name Gulch. If you're in the area, be sure to stop at Camp Hale, the first home of the 10th Mountain Division.
Ann, Dad, and I make our way up the road to the Grays Peak trailhead, and have a nice run back down again. (Ann literally had a run, in her snowshoes.)
On a bus trip to Silverton, CO, the New Mexico Cross Country Ski Club skied the Animas River Trail up to Howardsville. It was a cold and very windy day. The trail is below the road, closer to the river.

From the front door of the Grand Imperial Hotel in beautiful downtown Silverton, I skied around town and up to the Miner's Shrine. The temperature the night before had dropped to -25 degrees F.
Although there wasn't a ton of snow today, there was plenty for a fun ski experience. Caribou Trail is a fun little roller coaster ride on cross-country skis. It wouldn't be good for beginners, but it doesn't require a lot of expertise. I consider myself a novice and I had a blast on this trail. To view more detailed information about Caribou Trail near Nederland, Colorado click here.

Cross-country skiing | 8.5 miles
Cross-country skiing | 8.5 miles
Our goal was to do the 14-mile X-country ski loop around Turquoise Lake, but aborted, and ended up doing a total of 8.5 miles. We just ran out of steam, from the previous days of skiing! The good thing, we saved the loop for another time. The trail is well groomed for skate skiing, so you'll meet others on the trail. This trail is very close to Leadville, so if you are short...
