Trips
Time to kick back, and leave the driving to someone else....diesel bus and coal-fired, narrow-gauge, steam train. The Cumbres & Toltec is America's highest narrow-gauge steam train. We boarded the bus at Antonito, CO (7,888') and traveled 36 miles to Cumbres Pass (10,015'), the highest point on the rail route between Antonito and Chama. At Cumbres Pass we boarded locomotive #484, beginning our downhill (1.4% grade) journey to Antonito. The Lobato Trestle 5 miles...
We did our climbs.....so we earned this trip! Check the Leadville, Colorado & Southern website for ticket prices, and schedules. We enjoyed sitting on our butts and playing tourist for a change. I think you'll enjoy the trip, particularly if you plan to do it when the aspens turn to gold. And if you want to travel back in time, check out our Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad trip, just a few months later....
Michele, Chelsie, Josh, and I ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad from Devils Gate Station in Georgetown to Silver Plume Station.
We had planned to camp out at Piney Lake, but due to this years record snow fall the area was closed. Instead we drove down to Leadville and took the train ride up into the mountains. Beautiful trip and lots of fun.
We decided to take the old train from Durango to Silverton.. What Fun!!! Even though it was on approx 40 miles it took 3 hrs each way...Fantastic views, we saw rock climbers, white water rafting and folks even sliding down ropes on trees.... Of course the highlight was the old train and also the fire it started when sparks hit some old trees along the route and we watch the train folks having to put...
Drove down to Colorado Springs on a beautiful late Fall day and took the Pikes Peak cog railroad to the top. 67 degrees in Manitou and 34 at the summit. Beautiful!

The Rocky Mountains Tour 2012: Day 13
A school outing for my son, and an interesting historical site, the Georgetown Loop/Lebanon Mine tour is a great way to enjoy a day in the mountains. Totaling right about 2 1/2 hours including the mine tour, this trip is one of the must-do's along the front range.
