Trips
Taking the Amtrak from Springfield, MA to Los Angeles, CA. Although the GPS was a little buggy, overall the trip was pretty well documented. The signal cut out at the beginning, from Springfield to Albany, and also at the end, from somewhere in Arizona to Los Angeles. For the full information, check out Metacom's Blog for the full story!
During our Alaska Cruise we took a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad from Skagway up to the Canadian border and back. This was the most spectacular train ride I've ever been on. The route paralleled the trail taken by miners heading for Dawson in 1898 and in some places the trail was still visible. The GPS appeared to suffer from a case of high-altitude sickness but even so, the...
Early morning Mt. Rainier training hike.
Time to kick back, and leave the driving to someone else....diesel bus and coal-fired, narrow-gauge, steam train. The Cumbres & Toltec is America's highest narrow-gauge steam train. We boarded the bus at Antonito, CO (7,888') and traveled 36 miles to Cumbres Pass (10,015'), the highest point on the rail route between Antonito and Chama. At Cumbres Pass we boarded locomotive #484, beginning our downhill (1.4% grade) journey to Antonito. The Lobato Trestle 5 miles...
We were visiting friends in the Bronx; our hotel was in New Rochelle. Two must-do activities for visitors/tourists: go to the Bronx Zoo and go to a Yankees baseball game. The GPS tracks start at New Rochelle, Metro North train station. For the Zoo, get off at the Metro North Fordham stop and then take the bus to the Zoo. For Yankee Stadium, you need to take...
This is my commute every morning to work, via the Cable Car and then a short walk down Market St.
A pleasant train ride through the wilderness of West Virginia. You can ride in an authentic 1920-era coach and vintage wooden cabooses a vintage steam engine as it puffs and whistles her way along the free-flowing Greenbrier River in Northern Pocahontas County. You can also ride a private caboose to the end of the line and stay overnight. They will pull you back, in your private caboose, the next day.
At my cousin's recommendation, I booked a roomette on the Coast Starlight train from San Francisco to Seattle. It was a wonderful experience all around.
We did our climbs.....so we earned this trip! Check the Leadville, Colorado & Southern website for ticket prices, and schedules. We enjoyed sitting on our butts and playing tourist for a change. I think you'll enjoy the trip, particularly if you plan to do it when the aspens turn to gold. And if you want to travel back in time, check out our Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad trip, just a few months later....
Friday warm up run on the roads. Started at the ranger station and went through Makanda then down into the park and back to ranger station.
