"Threading the Needle" at Mt Bachelor

Alpine skiing | 48 miles
24" of snow the week prior. Skied with friends Hank and Jeff for part of the day. Had some great off-piste runs, including hitting ~all of the 360o catchline road ("the eye") and dropping into the cirque thru the pinnacles ("threading"). Doing both in one day is what is called "threading the needle."Had one run with a manager at Mt Bachelor. Bert? Anyway he was a good skier and had a great run and...

Alpine skiing | 16.9 miles
I almost got a full day of skiing over New Year's weekend but I took a bad spill that involved my left leg staying behind while the rest of me was too eager to get futher down the mountain.  An hour or so later my leg had tightened up to the point where left turns were pretty painful, and i decided it wouldn't be a great idea to only rely on my...

Best day so far this year (ha ha)

Bend, Oregon, United States
Alpine skiing | 39 miles
2" of snow the night prior with storms expected to clear by the end of the day. Rime ice at higher elevations was keeping the summit and west-side lifts closed, so spend the majority of morning on Rainbow lift. After a late lunch discovered the west-side lifts were open. Had a few great runs over there. Operators were nice enough to give the benefit of the doubt on closing time and so got...

Alpine skiing | 38 miles
A great day. Mt Bachelor has about 3500 vertical feet in a ski area that covers an entire mountain. This day I skied mostly expert runs to avoid people. Hiked to the summit and skied over the backside. A couple of these pics were taken on days other than the one I skied, just to give a better flavor.

Squaw Valley Skiing - Best day of the year
by joost on Jan 28, 2010
Squaw Valley, California, United States
Alpine skiing | 41 miles
We decided that weeks of daily 7 AM iPhone meetings would offset a day outside of the office up in the mountains... In other words, a good excuse can always be found for a day trip when the mountains receieved an 8 feet dump, with sunshine predicted for the day. Paul, Dave, Nicolas and I took of at 5.20 AM and were back home around 9 PM.Highlights of the day included Main...

Spring Skiing at Northstar

Northstar, California, United States
Alpine skiing | 40 miles
I managed to sneak in some Spring skiing just before the season was over.  On Friday evening, I drove up with my Dad, his friend Warren, and my friend David to Northstar where we stayed in the Northstar Village for 2 nights.  We got to the room around 11 pm and were all exhausted so we went straight to sleep.  On Saturday morning we work up on the earlier side, grabbed some...

Alpine skiing | 14.4 miles
Skiing in Homewood during the big storm. We only went for a few hours (bad visibility and we were covered with snow every time we got off a lift), but the powder was great when we didn't get stuck in it.

Alpine skiing | 72 miles
Park City with the soon-to-be-family was stupendous. A few feet of fresh stuff came right before our first day on the mountain and stayed soft the whole time. Temps were cold, but the hot tub was toasty, and good times with the family made for a great trip. Future-father-in-law got a little crazy on the last day and fractured his tibia in the 2002 winter olympics 22ft half pipe...
