Trips
The wind never dropped below 25knots all night. It was bumpy on Piel moorings but the crew on Misty were comfortable as it was flat in the shelter of Roa. I didn't sleep well, not because of the howling wind, nor the banging of waves against the hull, I worried about the mooring, when was it last checked, was it buried in the sand etc etc. I was alert listening to every...
after 4 years of work to bring the boat upto spec ,the day arrived for our departure . the dream to sail my own boat to sunnier climes before old age takes a grip, and the money runs out .But drama ,high water fleetwood 10.30 am ,we call the guy who opens the swing bridge to let us through to the fuel jetty, no answer some one calls to us he wont...
First trip to Piel in Aurora (Leisure 17). Wind F3/4 on the nose going, zilch coming back.
Apart from having freezing soaked hands & feet (rain both ways half the time) it was an excellent trip.
3 boats left the marina Lopud, Jetwind and Triagos and joined up with Misty and Zoom who launched from the slip and we set sail up the river at 9AM. Wind was force 3 from the SE. 2 OR 3 miles past the winmills at Walney the wind died to nothing and we all motored until a few miles off Maughold Head when the wind picked up again giving us a nice...
We locked out of the marina at 7 AM ready to leave Glasson at 9 at high tide. The race was due to start at 11 the start line being a transit between channel buoy 2 and Lune buoy. In the basin was Misty, Triagos, Levente and Jetwind. We set off down the river and were joined by Rice Pudding. The wind was around 16 Knots from the West meaning plenty of...
To begin her trip down to Portugal Cumulus needed taking from Glasson to Preston. Sailed out on the 8AM tide into F6-7 Westerly winds. The first 9 hours were pretty miserable slamming into the 3 or 4 meter confused seas, it was misty damp and cold. The sun came out the wind dropped as we entered the Ribble though.
Due to the high winds unfortunately only three boats turned out for the race, Jetwind being singlehanded by Slippers, Misty on her first sail crewed by Big John and Jack and Lopud crewed by John, Sonny and friend Dave who wanted to try out his sealegs. Tide was a 9.2M spring and forecast was for F5-7 Easterly for the whole weekend.
Waiting in the fishdock for the tide the wind was a constant...
GPS Log from the 2008 JOG St-Vaast race sailed on JFever.
What a weekend, thoroughly enjoyed by all (I think!!!!) A perfect days sailing followed by a chance to test boat and crew on the return trip.
9 boats set off on Saturday at exactly 1400hrs from the marks at the OOD box. The wind I would guess was F5 north westerly. The boats raced down the river keeping inside the buoyed area down to plover light, Norman on Rice Pudding X1 forgetting to...
The remaining Glasson fleet awoke after a slightly bumpy night to white foam streaking across the tops of the waves and a forecast of F8 south westerleys. A decision was made to leave about 11 and test the waters outside the Barrow channel. The remaining 7 boats all left their moorings in 1's and 2's under heavily reefed sails. Our engine went to overheat within seconds of untying from the mooring...

High tide was 1700hrs. Triagos, Jetwind, Rice pudding and Lopud left at 1630. We sailed down the Lune to Lune 1 and then to Piel. Wind was North Westerlty 16 to 20 knots gusting 25. Sea state was fairly calm. We all arrived safely about 1940hrs. As the Union Jack was flying outside the Ship Inn we decided to eat and then visit the island about 2100 hrs. Brian (Triagos) kindly volunteered...
We arose to a beautiful Sunny morning. It was decided last night to have a race back to Glasson leaving the jetty at Piel at 1230 and finishing at Lune Number1. In the event with zero wind and Jetwind having engine problems (which slippers soon solved) the start line was moved to sea 5.
We all motored/sailed up to sea 5 past about 80 seals on Walney and with the wind blowing at...
There was a good turn out for the Sea 5 race ,with 10 sailing cruisers on the start line. (Did any one take any pics.?) The results are:

During the night the wind dopped to 12 or 13 Knots and still from the West. We left the moorings at Piel at about 06:30 high tide being 10:50. Mist flew its spinnaker whilst the other boats went goosewinged most of the way back surfing on the 3 foot waves in the morning sunshine.
The trip to Fleetwood/Knott End usually means a run out to Lune 1, then down the Wyre Channel. My Leisure 17 draws 0.6m & I wanted to see if I could cut the corner and save a few miles. The charted depth of drying 5.5m near the Wyre seems to tie up with what I got on the sounder. Yhat was the shallowest area. The track is approx from No4 Lune to No.12 Wyre....
