Pete and I did an easy day hike in Western Harriman State Park.  We had a bunch of good photo opportunities and got to hang out with a snake for a bit.  Unfortunately we couldn't find any of the mines listed on the map.

Parked in the Whiteface Mountain overflow lot and using a free paper map available from either the Whiteface downhill shop or any of the Lake Placid bike shops, set off to explore this relatively new set of trails dedicated to mountain biking.Started with the trails marked as easy, then attacked the most difficult trail there.  So many rock gardens and roots that at one point I fell off the bike every 100...more

Ride was planned for 7:30am Saturday morning.  Started off at 29 degrees F (below freezing), which warranted heavy gloves, shoe booties, and layered biking clothing.  Parked at Ruston's Diner (eastern-most point on the map) and chose the option to drop down to the Rt. 481 valley and over to the quarry.  Discovered that all puddles were now ice and the dew that had formed overnight became frost on the numerous babyheads and...more

Split Rock is another abandoned quarry located on the west side of the Syracuse, NY, metro area.   Of our regular ride portfolio, Split Rock is probably the flattest, with only a minimal vertical climb/descent profile.  However, like its cousin, SkyTop Quarry, there are numerous technical sections combined with a large playground area of sorts that offer up hours of MTB entertainment. This morning we agreed on an 8:00am start time at King...more

Cycle 24.7 miles of the 26.2 mile 2009 ING NYC Marathon Route  minus the Verrazano Bridge and Staten Island. Ride the NYC Marathon course shortly before the race starts while runners start in Staten Island, we fore-go the Verrazano bridge crossing (sadly not an option) and start in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Finish in Central Park just a few yards from the official race finish. The ride officially ends at Central Park South and 59th...more

Not sure what the official name of this place is:  Olympic Sports Complex, Mt. Van Hoevenberg, or X/C ski trails.  In any even, there is a fun network of mountain bike trails here that, while not advanced in either the technical nor endurance department, are great for  warming up and maintaining endurance.  There is a fee to use these trails, but it is a modest $6.00 (as of  August 2009).The advanced trails,...more

Driving | 25.1 miles
This was me testing this program on my drive home from work. The maximum speed was a bit off, but overall seems quite accurate, the speed does not update as quickly/accurate as I hoped, but it catches up quick, so the average seems close enough, and the distance was spot on.This weekend I will test it out on the bike, and see if I am moving slower, it will be more accurate... I...more

On my first full day in New York I decided to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and then Ellis island.  I took a guided tour of Liberty Island and went in the museum, and also watched a moving film at Ellis Island. I have to say, my first day ever in New York wasn't bad at all.  There was so much to see and it was all pretty tiring,...more

Danger Dave Brosig from Niagara Falls graced the presence of members of the Olean Area Hiking group today at the Art Roscoe Ski and Mountain Biking area of Allegany State Park. Dave had generously offered his time and expertise to impart basic bike maintenance tips and off road biking techniques to willing students Kathy, Pauline, Bob, Colleen, and Kim. We ate some dirt, we sprayed some mud, we jumped some downed trees...more

The annual Good Friday trip with the guys. This event was marked by the fact that we missed an important turn off on the way in and subsequently snowshoed in 4 feet of fresh powder an extra several miles... and ending up at Middle Settlement instead of Middle Branch as planned. On the way in I (Jeremy) managed to fall through an ice cornice into a waist-high stream about a mile from...more

Overlook of Honeoye Lake Photo
HHS is one of the best, most reliable, places for cross-country skiing in Western NY. Overlooking Honeyoye Lake, it gets and retains snow better than many other spots in the Rochester-Buffalo area. It's used by local schools for training and races; some trails are groomed. Cross-country skiers are often joined by snowshoers and even mushers. We got a bit of snow over the night of the 12th, giving about four inches of fresh...more
