David and I were ready to try some snow camping in Yosemite this weekend, but the weather report had other plans.  It was set to rain on the first day in Yosemite, and we decided that camping in snow while being rained on did not sound like a good use of a weekend (hopefully we will get some clear skies soon!).  Since we had psyched ourselves up for a backpacking trip for...more

We knew the waterfalls would be good after the recent storms, so Antony, Dave, Laurent, Sammy, David and I headed out to Big Basin this weekend. We had a rough loop planned that included the Skyline to the Sea Trail so we were a bit disappointed when we showed up and learned the trail was closed due to a washed out bridge and fallen old-growth redwoods across the trail. Not a group to...more

Where to go for a long hike when a series of powerful storms has drenched the whole area for a week? There are not that many places that will be mud free. One of them is Big Basin Redwoods State Park. While searching the web for photos of Berry Creek Falls, I found a description of a hike going from Waddell Beach to the fall and this seemed very appealing to me. A great group hike with the usual suspects: Sammydee, Antonyw, Vaudesir, Calipidder & David. The weather was excellent (slightly chilly at times), the falls were all very impressive, and the trails beautiful.Actual elevation change for this hike seems to be around 3,000', maybe less. Unfortunately, about half of that was in one long slog of a climb up Mt. McAbee, and Antony & I had both made the mistake of scarfing down...more

Several others have told the story, so I'll be brief.   We (Calipidder, DM, Vaudesir, Antonyw, Croyle) met at the park HQ at 9 intending to do a loop through the park.  It was 36 degrees at HQ when I arrived - quite a bit colder than I had planned for.  At the park HQ they warned us about a trail closure that had us rethinking our route, but that ultimately didn't exist.  I think we wound...more

A medium-length hike from the Coe Park headquarters to China Hole on Coyote Creek.  The weather was pretty variable -- a pretty steady drizzle for the first half, followed by sunshine (enough to fool me into doffing my rain gear) at the turn-around point, shortly followed by brief heavy rain and graupel.  Fortunately, I had a new hard shell (a Marmot Transit jacket, bought on SteepAndCheap less than a week ago) and...more

I and a number of other volunteers hiked the Mummy Mountain trail at Coyote Lake County Park.  This trail, under construction for a year, is not yet open; it will be completed and opened in April 2010.  On this day volunteers hiked the sections of trail that are now complete and weeded out invasive Milk Thistle.  It was a rainy day, but the trail was still spectacular.  I can't wait until it...more

Chris and I set off to explore the wilderness that is Big Sur, in hopes of camping near the Sykes hotsprings. However, we encountered a couple problems. Before we left on our journey, the area had seen relentless rain for two straight weeks. Fortunately for our outing, the rain let up while we were out and about. The hills were very moist and brooks were plentifully racing down towards Big Sur River and...more

I finally found a few hours to get out and explore. My favorite thing about riding. I have the west side of packsaddle road in the Goldfields mapped out. Now it was time to ride east of Packsaddle and make the connection to Jacob’s Crosscut trail at the base of the Supes. Chollaball and I rode from Lost Goldmine to the Shed a couple of weeks ago to find the connection. I wanted to scout the...more

big slidewhow javascript:nicTemp();This was supposed to be at least a five mile hike winding through the heart of the park, but due to exigent circumstances I had to cut it short.   I’ve been to Mt. Madonna road along the Loop trail (what an imaginative name) for a mile and then back with my dogs, so I really don’t know the park very well.   I started in...more

I've decided to document a few of the backcountry lines on The Ridge at Bridger Bowl.  The GPS track shows the hike up the Ridge starting atop the Bridger Lift, the hike along the Ridge out to and down into Hidden Couloir.  From the base of the couloir proper the route follows a skiier's left travers into the Northwest Passage line followed by the descent through to the top of the Deer Park lift.  This track...more

We decided that weeks of daily 7 AM iPhone meetings would offset a day outside of the office up in the mountains...
