If you can make it across the busy River IJ in one piece, this is a beautiful trip, if not a bit too ambitious. It took me almost 5 hours.I wanted to see the cute old dyke-village of Nieuwendam from the water. This stretch of 3 villages with little wooden houses in the style of Waterland was a popular place for retired seamen in the 19th century. Unfortunately I was too early...
Start: Zuidschalkwijkerweg in Haarlem. 2 canoe piers are located next to the road. Parking is free.Head right toward the city. Turn right after the second bridge (the 'paint roller'). You are on Burgwal. At end of Burgwal, head left, cross the water and go right underneath the bridge. You are on Bakenessegracht. At the end, turn right. onto Nieuwegracht. When you cross the next bridge, you see a windmill. Go left. Keep left after crossing the rail road bridge....
