Kushiro to Lake Akan (阿寒湖)
by southsider on Aug 08, 2009
Kushiro, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
Mountain biking | 51 miles
There was a bike path just outside Kushiro city.  But the scenes of the wetland was blocked by the bushes planted by the path. The road to Akan was ascending all the way.  We got really tired and paused in front of a house.  The owner invited us in for tea.Akan is quite a tourist trap.  But it is still nice to stroll around.  The biggest attraction is manimo,  a type of...

Mountain biking | 74 miles
We started our cycling journey of Hokkaido today.  We rode north bound along the bike path just outside Sapporo downtown, and then turned to highway 275.  The bridge over Ishikari River was quite narrow, and the traffic was very busy, so we turned to highway 12 instead.  Our first plan was to get to Asahikawa today, but it was dark when we got to Fukugawa.  We found the Maabu camping site after...

We got waken up in the middle of the night by rain drops.  We hustled to cramp our bags into the tiny space by the tent, and then crawled into the sleeping bag again. Some Japanese women met  Mei in the kitchen and gave us some rice for breakfast.  Highway 12 was very busy and narrow at some parts.  Luckily, we discovered a bike path behind a suspension bridge.  The path was flat...

Biei to Furano (富良野)
by southsider on Aug 05, 2009
Biei, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
Mountain biking | 38 miles
Low hills with green plantation made the hills beyond Biei quite scenic.  We spent some time riding around town of Biei and the nearby hills, and then headed south to Furano.  When we got to town of Furano, we found a RH sign just outside a house.  We rang the door bell, and a lady who spoke zero Englishan swered the door.  We squeezed all Japanese phrases we knew to communicate with her. ...

Mountain biking | 68 miles
After we rode several kilometers, I suddenly found that I lost my sunglasses.  We went back to fetch the glasses.  Luckily, we found them. The way to Mashu Ko was a big slope.  However, the most annoying thing was the stinging flies.  They followed us all the way and bited whenever they got chances.  We fought along all the way.  We rode to a site where many autobikers gethered together.  Quite an motorbike...

We went to the Shiretoko Go Ko in the early morning.  The road to the Go Ko were full of  ups and downs.  It took a lot more time to get there than we expected.  The five lakes are quite tiny, but full of wild lives.  There were many deer along the way.  There were many warning signs regarding bears, but we didn't see any one of them.  Most Japanese who went...

by southsider on Aug 19, 2009

Mountain biking | 54 miles
Toyako in the early morning was very tranquil.  It seemed that we are the only people around here.  It started to rain in the middle of the journey.  It'd be terrible to camp in such raining days.   When we unload our stuff, we found we're muddy and wet, even inside the bags.

We couldn't find any store along Shikotsuko, so we didn't have a proper breakfast .  The slopes were steeper than I thought.  After Passing the saddle and riding downward,  We finally found a convenient store near the Sapporo Art Park.  We had our meal at a bench, but didn't bother to get into the park.  We then rode on the bike path along the river  to the Sapporo city.
