Trips
James Hetzel is the president of www.CatholicStore.com and he came to Israel to join us on our pilgrimage. He came early so I thought he would like a quick running tour of Jerusalem to get oriented. We ran from the Notre Dame Center where we are staying an around the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is about 2.6 miles. He decided to stop at the Notre Dame on the...
Landed in Israel at 3:30 AM and got to bed about 7 AM. Slept until afternoon and took off for a run to get acclimated as soon as possible and to begin "feeling" like I am here. It was cool and perfect for running. Ran west of Notre Dame through West Jerusalem, Mea Shearim and around to Mount Scopus then back to Notre Dame. Felt great! Good to be back.
This program needs to offer the ability to arrange the sequence of pictures since the first two are backwards for this run. I ran north to start and took pictures of each gate around the Old City of Jerusalem. The first half is downhill but boy, do you pay the piper on the way back. Passed lots of kids walking to school -- Christian, Muslim and Jewish.
Today I ran through Hell and back. When Jesus talked about hell he referred to Gehenna and pointed to this Valley of Hinnom which was the city dump and we burning all the time with smoke billowing up and maggots and flies among the stench. This was his example of what hell was. I ran through the valley which is now a beautiful city park. I ran as far as the Alkedma...

We started our day with Mass in Galilee and finished the Galilee portion of our Catholic pilgrimage. We drove through the Jordan Valley and arrived in Jerusalem as the sun was setting. I got everyone settled in and then I took off again around the walls of the Old City -- fun at night in the dark -- a new view on the city. Came back and joined my group for dinner...
Eight of us took off running around the Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, including Archbishop Pettipas. The map tracking didn't work exactly right, losing us at times due to cloud cover and the thick city walls. Rain held off so it was a nice cool run. I am also posting a YouTube video of the run at www.CatholicConvert.com -- go to the blog and today's date.
Arrived in Jerusalem at 4 AM. Unpacked and went to Mass at 5:30 AM at the Tomb of Christ one day after Easter. Breakfast and a nap. Woke up at 3 PM and took off for a run around the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem visiting in order: New Gate, Jaffa Gate, Zion Gate, Mount Zion with Church of Dormitian, Upper Room and St Peter in Gallicantu. Then to Dung Gate...
Squeezed for time today so I could run less than I wanted. Took off from Notre Dame Center and headed for the Muslim area in E. Jerusalem. Passed by the fake tomb of Christ established by Protestants who don't like the Catholic and historical tomb. Then past the place St. Stephen was martyred. I visited my Israel agents at Shepherd Tours and then past Damascus Gate and back up the steep hill...
Beautiful cool morning perfect for running. Arrived in Jerusalem with our group last night in a sandstorm but today is bright and clear with a gorgeous sunrise. Great to be in jerusalem!
Our group left last night so I thought I'd go for a good run. Beautiful day but a bit warm. Ran around the Walls of Jerusalem, over Mount Zion into Upper Room, through Dung Gate to the Western Wall, around to visit my Israel agent Raji Khoury of Shepherds Tours. Then through the Muslim neighborhoods into Mea Shearim -- the Hassidic Jewish ccmmunity. They to the far side of Jerusalem and back...
Our flight was canceled due to the plume of ash from the volcano in Iceland. So we were lucky to get another day in Jerusalem plus upgraged to business class and flying a much more sane hour of the day. Very hot running today and I was a bit weary and sore from yesterday's 8.4 mile run. Glad I did it though.
