The fall colours were out, and we couldn't have asked for a nicer day for a ride!This is following the old trail along the banks of the Slave River from Fitzgerald, AB to Fort Smith, NT.
It was too cold to spend much time outside yesterday, but nice enough today to go play. A lot of the trek was following animal tracks around the edge of the ice, with some clambering over rocks, ice, and even into a little ice cave!The river can be a little unsettling - when you hear the cracks and shifts, you make sure you are close to shore!

A beautiful fall day - not many left I'm sure. We were following the Trans Canada Trail routes as much as we could. Started at the old cemetary near Fort Fitzgerald with Kevin, Mike, Don, and me. We toured past Cassette Rapids and Pelican Rapids to "Halfway" where a couple of the guys had to head back. Kevin and I continued on past Mountain Rapids and the ski trails back to town. I...
+21 in October is almost a record, so couldn't resist a quick hike into Pelican. The sun sets way too early now though, so the hike back out was in the dark.

With the temperature bouncing above and below freezing, the skidoo tracks were turning into great bike trails. We headed across the Slave River on the morning of Good Friday, and toured around until the trails started getting soft. The Ice Road across the river was pretty slick - I don't think anybody made it across without having to jump off the bike!
We had to get one more Fitz-Smith Bike in before Kevin & Crystal left town! The day was a little rainy, but temperature was good. About 9 km in, I managed to put a branch threw my rear derailleur and tore it right off! We did a jury-rig to turn my 27-speed into a 1-speed, but it just wasn't going to work in the trails so I had to hike back out...

We have lived in Fort Smith for many years but only ever have been to Fort Chip on the winter road. This was a first for us. It was very cool.
