When the glaciers receded over 10,000 years ago they left behind huge ridges of sand, thus the name Sandilands Provincial Forest. Most of the hiking is done on fine beach sand, but you are still surrounded by a pine forest. There are many more trails, this is just one of them.
After discovering that the Morden community trail continues along south along Lake Minnewasta, we decided to pack a light lunch and attempt an initial partial exploration. What we found was incredible, and we determined for a longer adventure in the future -- especially when the green returns to the grass and trees in the summer.
The old Pinawa Dam is a great little walk around a historical site with much to see. There is a series of signs that allow people to learn the history of why the dam is an important engineering feat. The walk is light, but becomes more moderate when you reach the rocks.
This is a historic part of the Trans Canada Trail. The suspension bridge currently in place replaced the original one from 1946 which was built to allow children to cross the river as they walked up to 2 miles to school (imagine getting a kid to do that these days in -35degC weather!). Walked with my brother on a sunny afternoon. The wooded portion is OK - some nice oaks and tall stands of birch and aspen. The creek itself was delightful. Cold and clear, wide-open with banks of sand and stones. Tiny fish and huge water striders.
A walk through the bush in Birds Hill Park on a route that is more commonly used for cross-country skiing. Varying surfaces include paved bike trail, gravel double track, and wide mowed grass trail. Not particularly scenic.
Nice variety on a short trail. Fairly serious mosquitoes - better to do it in the fall.
