The fourth and final race in the FNQ Trail Running series. This Point-to-Point race starts just off Kennedy Highway in Kuranda and follows Black Mountain Road that runs through native rainforest, open eucalypt forest, pine plantations and crosses picturesque creeks. It is a scenic course incorporated in the Mowbray National Park within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The pyramid-shaped Black Mountain is a prominent feature of the race. The tropical rainforest is home to the endangered southern cassowary, a...

Ship's Stern and Dave's Creek, Binna Burra
by tamyka on Oct 17, 2012
Springbrook, Queensland, Australia
Trail running | 14.9 miles
Ship's Stern Circuit is one of my favourite tracks at Binna Burra. Ruth took a day off work to run it with me. The traffic was pretty bad getting there, and Beechmont Road is in terrible condition on the Nerang side, with some roadworks in place. We decided that we'd do the road section first and in a downhill direction, so we took the clockwise loop. Highlights were meeting a carpet python and...

Somerset Trail, Mt Mee
by tamyka on Jan 06, 2013
Mount Mee, Queensland, Australia
Trail running | 7.5 miles
This is an all-weather trip that's prettiest at its start and halfway points. Most of the trail is dry schlerophyll, best covered at running pace—as a walk it might get boring. It's undulating with no steep climbs. Take care around the lookouts when it's wet.The vertical gain seems amplified on my iPhone, with Garmin BaseCamp and the Australian Topo map suggesting it's more like 340m each way, so don't be alarmed!

The Black Snake
by CairnsRoadRunners on Jan 15, 2011
Bayview Heights, Queensland, Australia
Trail running | 20 miles
The second of four races in the FNQ Trail Running series, this race is named after what is probably the most common snake seen in the rainforest. The Red-bellied Black Snake is often just called the Black Snake by Far North Queenslanders, who spot it frequently laying on trails basking in the sun. It’s not aggressive, and while its bite is considered dangerous, it is unlikely to result in death! From picturesque Copperlode Dam this trail run starts...
