It
was an early sign that this was not a typical way to fly. “Keep to the right of
the runway as you land,” the airport manager casually advised. “There is a
plane bogged on the left.”
Fortunately,
the warning came in plenty of time - not as we descended to the isolated
central Australian airfield at William Creek, but during my pilot friends’
diligent pre-flight phone checks. Still, it’s a bit of a shock when landing
preparation goes beyond...
I remember this trip well, though two years have passed now. Things weren't going well; I'd had problems with my motorhome at El Questro and trashed the electric entry step; at Katherine I'd had my generator stolen; at Kununurra I'd left the T.V. antenna up and it had been ripped out on a tree branch. Thus my mood wasn't great but I set out on the walk having absolutely no idea where...

Part of a 155km Saturday solo ride. (I had nothing else to do!) It included a 25km section of track that DORC has previously used in their 2007 100km race. I was warned that the track may be a bit wet! Tropical Darwin, means that a wet season has been and gone since the track was used. Nine foot tall grass, creeklines still wet, wild pig wallows and wet...

So here is the first training session after registering for the 2011 Oxfam Trailwalker as team 164. We met just outside Alice Springs near Simpsons gap around 8.00am, and after a quick car shuffle were on the Woodland Trail about 8.20am. It was very pleasant walking weather, cool and clear, and with plenty of new growth and flowers on the vegetation. We had a quick break at Rocky Creek we removed shoes and socks...
Walked around the base of the rock today as it was closed due to strong
winds. It was an amazing walk and with the rain they had over the last
36hrs (75mm) the surroundings were very green, lush and moist. Lots of
waterholes and puddles with tadpoles in them. I was quite surprised to
see so much green in the desert! Half way around there was a huge puddle
of water which...
Climbed the rock today. Lucky as it was the only day open the whole time
we were there. We arrived at the rock expecting a fairly easy climb,
but we were (I was) mistaken! Just the first bit up to the chain rope
was scary! Once on the chain rope I felt a little better until I looked
back and saw how steep the rock really was! Managed to get to the...
Kings Canyon walk 6.5km took us 2.5hrs. Amazing trip this one. We nearly didn't do it but decided at the last minute to do it. Came across some beautiful brumbies on the road. Viewed Mt Connor which is often mistaken for Ayres Rock. The walk was beautiful and magnificent! Drive home was a little exciting, when in the darkness some brumbies decided to cross the road while I'm doing 100km/h! Breaks...

Budgies and Rob driving at 120km/h on cruise control over an area graders had just been thru and fishtailing it up the right embankment and ripping the tyre off the rim! Bit scary and I said shit alot! Managed to change the tyre over to the spare we had to find that we didn't have the correct sized bolts! So on went the space saver for the next 120km to Warberton where...
