We knew the waterfalls would be good after the recent storms, so Antony, Dave, Laurent, Sammy, David and I headed out to Big Basin this weekend. We had a rough loop planned that included the Skyline to the Sea Trail so we were a bit disappointed when we showed up and learned the trail was closed due to a washed out bridge and fallen old-growth redwoods across the trail. Not a group to...more

Where to go for a long hike when a series of powerful storms has drenched the whole area for a week? There are not that many places that will be mud free. One of them is Big Basin Redwoods State Park. While searching the web for photos of Berry Creek Falls, I found a description of a hike going from Waddell Beach to the fall and this seemed very appealing to me. A great group hike with the usual suspects: Sammydee, Antonyw, Vaudesir, Calipidder & David. The weather was excellent (slightly chilly at times), the falls were all very impressive, and the trails beautiful.Actual elevation change for this hike seems to be around 3,000', maybe less. Unfortunately, about half of that was in one long slog of a climb up Mt. McAbee, and Antony & I had both made the mistake of scarfing down...more

Several others have told the story, so I'll be brief.   We (Calipidder, DM, Vaudesir, Antonyw, Croyle) met at the park HQ at 9 intending to do a loop through the park.  It was 36 degrees at HQ when I arrived - quite a bit colder than I had planned for.  At the park HQ they warned us about a trail closure that had us rethinking our route, but that ultimately didn't exist.  I think we wound...more

A medium-length hike from the Coe Park headquarters to China Hole on Coyote Creek.  The weather was pretty variable -- a pretty steady drizzle for the first half, followed by sunshine (enough to fool me into doffing my rain gear) at the turn-around point, shortly followed by brief heavy rain and graupel.  Fortunately, I had a new hard shell (a Marmot Transit jacket, bought on SteepAndCheap less than a week ago) and...more

nice hike from Pok Fu Lam reservoir, up west peak thing via peak tram station, then down to central.  Somehow don't trust the information from the iPhone though, don't remember going up to 130 km/h, or climbing 1,100 m, was more like 500, i think.

This hike is brought to you by The Nino.  I always love an El Nino year so as soon as it fired up plans were started to hike out and check out the amazing falls here. It's a very beautiful but challenging little hike through Big Basin.  We intended to go clockwise but the latest storms had downed many trees in the park making Skyline to the Sea trail impassable according to the Rangers.  It...more

big slidewhow javascript:nicTemp();This was supposed to be at least a five mile hike winding through the heart of the park, but due to exigent circumstances I had to cut it short.   I’ve been to Mt. Madonna park many times, but most of the time I hiked from Mt. Madonna road along the Loop trail (what an imaginative name) for a mile and then back with my dogs, so I really don’t know the park very well.   I started in...more

A quick hike from Stiles to Fortini to see how the flowers are doing.  Poppies have started along Stiles already,  looks like another banner year for them.  Saw a single California Gilia along stiles as well as some fiddlenecks, goldfields, shooting stars, claytonia, lomatium and some buttercups.  Not bad for January.  Gotta love California for shorts and tshirt hiking in January.  Trails were muddy but not terrible.  Saw a Kestrel and another...more

After weeks of rain and cabin fever it was time to get back out on the trail. A group of about 40 hikers from the East Bay Casual Hiking Group headed out to Shell Ridge Open Space for a hike to Borges Ranch and back. Hike leader Andrew guaranteed dry trails and sunny skies so of course we all brought our best boots & gear. Okay, I admit it, despite the mud the...more

It was non-stop rain in Southern California the week of January 17, 2010 and we were having a strong case of cabin fever. The weather cleared Friday evening and the weekend forecast was looking good. That evening I saw that Kolby, aka the Hike Guy (thehikeguy.com and 100hikes.com) had posted an invite for a hike to Vasquez Rocks Park. We had always wanted to go there and this looked like a great...more

Earlier, at the times when few Taiwanese could speak English, it was known among the expats, mostly missionaries, as Mt. Morrison, thought to have been named...more
