This trip was a Christmas present of Kathrin's parents. Setting foot on such a massive and untamed volcano is an unforgettable experience. Faced with the sheer force of steam and lava, you soon realise how much mankind is dependant of the grace of mother nature. We did neither visit nor "conquer" White Island - it merely tolerated our presence.

Walk through the gardens of the Ginkaku-Ji temple in Kyoto. The gardens are probably the most impressive ones I have seen on our 1-week visit to Japan. Following the Ginkaku-Ji we walked the Philosopher's walk.

Van tour with significant bushwalking stretches, Dec. 14-25, 2003.  Tasmania is a beautiful island of old growth forests, animals & plants found nowhere else on earth (including the Australian mainland), and friendly people.  My trip included a scenic small plane flight over (and landing briefly in) the roadless South West Wilderness.  Also a climb to the summit of CradleMountain, the island’s 5th highest peak.  This pre-GPS trip was recreated manually (painstakingly!).

Argentina tour, second stop, Dec. 27-29, 2006.  I lost a day's worth of GPS data (segments W & N of Ushuaia) and had to draw in the tracks and manually place pics in Tierra del Fuego Nat'l Park, but they should be pretty close.

While in Boston, the Freedom Trail was a must.  It is a great tour of all of the major significant historical landmarks the city has to offer, starting at Boston Common and ending at the resting place of the USS Constitution ("old ironsides" - America's oldest commissioned warship).  The weather was perfect for a walk through the city, and the city was beautiful.  We took a quick detour to see the Holocaust...more

Third & final stop on my Argentina trip was the El Calafate glacier region.  Perito Moreno is one of Argentina's -- and the world's -- most-visited glaciers, being fairly accessible via road+boat.  It's also one of the few glaciers that's not shrinking.  We overnighted at Estancia Alice, a working sheep ranch on the shore of Lago Argentino, the country's biggest lake.  From here it was back to Buenos Aires followed by a...more

We got to see a giant 'strangling tree', a leopard cat, elephants, gibbons, hornbils, a crocodile, the waterfall from the movie 'the beach', and beautiful views. Khao Yai is the oldest national park in Thailand, and one of the most beautiful. We had a great time.

A short hike with my colleagues to Dead Bat's Cave."The Dead Bats’ Cave belongs among the largest and most important high mountain caves in Slovakia. It is situated in the central part of the Low Tatras in the Ďumbier high mountain karst (1,750 m above the sea). The relatively small, deeply folded limestone massif of the Kozie Chrbty 2 km long and 300 m wide, contains a lot of passages inside spread over by now known 14...more

On my first full day in New York I decided to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and then Ellis island.  I took a guided tour of Liberty Island and went in the museum, and also watched a moving film at Ellis Island. I have to say, my first day ever in New York wasn't bad at all.  There was so much to see and it was all pretty tiring,...more
