A long 16.5 mile day-hike with nearly 5,000 feet of vertical gain, and one of the best-kept secrets of SoCal.
One of the best-kept secrets of Southern California is San Bernardino Mountain. Just five miles away from the highest peak in SoCal — San Gorgonio — San Bernardino tops out at a respectable 10,649 feet. Hiking from Angelus Oaks, this 16-mile out-and-back trail climbs over 4,600 vertical feet. It makes for a very long day hike or a great weekend...
At 11,503' "Old Greyback" is the tallest mountain in Southern California.
San Gorgonio is the tallest mountain in Southern California, and a right of passage for serious hikers in the area. At 11,503′, “Old Grayback” provides an excellent high altitude training for those preparing to summit Mt. Whitney, and only 90 minutes away from Orange County. There are several trails leading up to San Gorgonio, but none as steep...
2.7 mile trail near Gilman Hot Springs, California
Massacre Canyon is about 2.7 miles long and located near Gilman Hot Springs, California. The trail is great for geocaching and normally takes a half day. From the road you don't have a clue what beauty lies just to the north. When the rains come the canyon floor will be impassable.
Hidden among rock-studded hills, Lake Perris State Recreation Area’s 8,800 acres of broad valley are bounded on three sides by low ridges. The Bernasconi Hills and the Russell, Apuma and Armada Mountains obscure the view of nearby cities. Inland, the San Bernardino, San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains, snow-capped in winter months, stand tall in...

Hiking | 22 miles (8.6 miles away)
This trip from July 2009 starts on the South Fork Trail, passes Dry Lake and connects with the Sky High Trail. The descent loops back to the South Fork trail by crossing the Dollar Lake saddle. Our original intent was to head up the South Fork trail via Dollar Lake Saddle, but along the way we decided to make a longer day of things and made the loop passing Dry Lake up to...

Hiking | 17.3 miles (9.3 miles away)
Hiked this as the finale to my Six Pack of Peaks training plan for the JMT. Terrific weather and a long, strenuous (but rewarding) hike. I really enjoyed the forested section that paralleled Vivian Creek. The higher sections are very exposed, but offer terrific panoramic views. This is an all-day affair, so plan for an early start. We started hiking at 6am, and with breaks, got back to our car at 6pm....

Hiking | 14.1 miles (8.8 miles away)
This is an amazing trail in so many ways.San Bernardino Peak is the third highest peak in Southern California, yet very few people have heard of it (everyone knows about San Gorgonio and San Jacinto). The trail is less-traveled as a result. But what really surprised me was the spectacular 360 degree views. Great views out over the inland empire as well as the high deserts to the east. We even caught...

Hiking | 22 miles (8.2 miles away)
We were pretty weak on Saturday, hiking in only around seven or eight miles before setting up camp at Saxton Camp around 8,300. The second day we planned to hike to Dollar Lake Saddle then cut across the San Bernardino divide to East San Bernardino Peak and down a trace-trail back to the truck. We got as far as Alta Diablo Peak (or so we thought) at 10,550. Turns...

How to get there: Take Hwy 330 (mountain resorts) into Running Springs, merge onto Hwy 18 towards Big Bear, left on Crab Flats Road (dirt road), take dirt road until end at bathrooms, trailhead up hill to right from bathrooms and water tower. The Down Hike: The hike down is rather quick and fun, especially with a group of friends. It is a quick decent to the Crab Creek crossing. After crossing, follow trail to deep...

Hiking | 24 miles (9.3 miles away)
This day hike, while listed at 24.5 miles, actually tracked at 26.5. It includes six peaks from the Hundred Peaks Section (HPS) of the Sierra Club. The six peaks in order were; Dragons Head, Bighorn Mountain, San Gorgonio, Jepson, Little Chartlon, and Charlton. We originially set out to include six additional peaks (Dobbs, Alto Diablo, Shields, Anderson, San Bernadino East, San Bernadino, but simply ran out of time as we were moving...

Hiking | 7.6 miles (8.6 miles away)
A geotagged walk from behind Angelus Oaks, CA to just below the summit of San Bernardino. We turned around just past Washington's monument. Been on top before, and the view's a lot better from the bench right below the monument anyway.
All together, fourteen and a half miles, 4,400 feet of elevation gain and loss. More than I'd normally do, but I think that not taking my big camera bag made life easier....

I decided to go explore the Wildwood Canyon State Park in Yucaipa, CA. I've never been there before.I took my dog Bubba and we set off to the designated entrance, according to the website http://wildwoodcanyonstatepark.com. There seem to be two primary entrances. The main entrance there's a dirt parking lot and a small road, on the East side of Canyon Drive, leading to a closed gate (see the furthest South picture). Just beyond...

The 17 peak San Gorgonio traverse was one hike I’ve been wanting to do for awhile now. I was finally was able to persuade two of my good hiking friends, Brian Mason and Bill Simpson to accompany me over Labor Day weekend. I had mapped out the traverse from Fish Fork trailhead and ending at Angelus Oaks trailhead, which worked out to around 37 miles. Bill suggested a few changes, which consisted...

Hiking to a point of confluence. I ended up with a very challenging hike crawiling at times in thick brush and walking thru the water and many miles trying to find where my car was parked.
