Hiking | 4.8 miles (26.7 miles away)
Hiking | 4.8 miles (26.7 miles away)
Our trek began at Bear Mountain State Park where we started to hike around Roe Pond. As we entered the first mile we experienced a steady but easy incline. As we entered the second and third mile we experienced a growing incline, where we had to crawl up large boulders/rocks to get to our check points. When we reached the peak, we hiked approximately 1,300 ft. vertically. The trek down was a...
Pyramid Mountain - Tripod Rock

Hiking | 4.1 miles (25.6 miles away)
Hiking | 4.1 miles (25.6 miles away)
A nice 4 mile hike through mainly wooded trails. Trails are very well marked and the trail map (copies found at the trailhead) is very clear. Nice visitor's center with rest room also located at the start of the trail. We took the longer hike, past Bear Rock, Whale Head Rock, then back down to Tripod Rock. This was obviously the highlight of the hike. It was a warm Saturday morning when...
So close and yet - so lovely. Only ran into two other dogs along the way, the second one was a very sweet, three-legged rescue who was very interested in Lizzy. Unfortunately, Lizzy didn't really reciptricate. Nor did the Japaense owner.
Buttermilk Falls and Blauvelt State Park

Hiking | 4.4 miles (10.4 miles away)
I had to add a track for the last part of the hike. I must have inadvertently stopped the gps. And now its showing at the beginning of the hike. It was really at the end. Distance is accurate now. Time was 1:55.Anyway, we started out at the parking area for Buttermilk Falls County Park on Greenbush Road in West Nyack. Took the blue trail from the N end of the parking...

Pete and I did an easy day hike in Western Harriman State Park. We had a bunch of good photo opportunities and got to hang out with a snake for a bit. Unfortunately we couldn't find any of the mines listed on the map.
East Irvington Nature Preserve

East Irvington, New York, United States
Hiking | 1.2 miles (8.7 miles away)
Hiking | 1.2 miles (8.7 miles away)
Finished early with a client on a Friday morning, and before I drove back to Jersey, decided to do some hiking and geocaching in a little nature preserve just behind the office. There's a gravel road and one trail, which together make a little loop you could walk in 25 minutes if you didn't stop for pictures and to find the two geocaches. It's not the Appalachian, but it works the kinks out after...
Popolopen Torne - Harriman State Park

Stony Point, New York, United States
Hiking | 8.4 miles (26.2 miles away)
Hiking | 8.4 miles (26.2 miles away)
Parked at Anthony Wayne lot. Headed west and north on the Anthony Wayne trail. Turned right on the 1779 trail, which merged with the Popolopen Gorge, Timp-Torne and 1777 W trails. Followed the Timp-Torne trail up the Torne and down the other side. Cut across Route 6 and followed an old overgrown road which eventually crossed the Appalachian Trail. Bore right on the AT, crossed 7 Lakes Drive, then right on the...
A hike through Blue Mountain Reservation

Peekskill, New York, United States
Hiking | 6.2 miles (24.5 miles away)
Hiking | 6.2 miles (24.5 miles away)
This was an interesting walk/hike from Peekskill station, through Blue Mountain Reservation and Depew Park back to the station. We encountered quite a significant amount of wildlife including frogs and snakes. We also saw quite a few different species of mushrooms. We also encountered a bog where the frogs were making some really odd noises... akin to rubber band sounds effects...
Instead of re-telling the route, I have included the link to the NYNJ Trail Conference web site which describes it. That is where we got the loop plan and we followed it as described. We only took a couple tangents for better viewing. My GPS track reports that this was approx. 6 miles. It took us 3.5 hours, excluding a short break for about 15 minutes. So, its got some aggressive stuff,...

Garrison, New York, United States
Hiking | 5.6 miles (31.2 miles away)
Hiking | 5.6 miles (31.2 miles away)
A hike up Sugarloaf Hill from the Garrison Metronorth stop. Apparently the top of Sugarloaf is the only place in the Hudson Valley where cacti grow. You will also pass nearby a massive privately owned castle on the top of a hill during this hike. Enjoy!
Went walking on the Shore Trail of the Palisades Interstate Park. The walk began the near the Kearney House at the north end of the Alpine Picnic Area. The white-blazed Shore Trail is behind the Alpine Pavilion; it heads north along the Hudson River. From here the Giant Steps are a 3 mile walk. There is additional information here and here.

Hiking | 9.4 miles (26.6 miles away)
This hike incorporated a variety of interesting aspects. It was a nice long loop that took us 4 hours, and there was not much in terms of breaks. Really we just stopped to explore and take pics vs. taking breaks. We parked near the Elk Pen on Arden Road. We crossed the field and got a little bit of a false start on Arden-Surebridrge (A-SB, red diamond on white). Once we got reset...
