The Sycamore Trail is located in William B. Umstead State Park. It is one of my favorite trails in the park. The trailhead is located on the northern side (highway 70 entrance) of the park. If you follow the loop counterclockwise and take a right turn when you first descend down to Sycamore Creek you will see the remains of an old dam and may be able to get to Sycamore Lake...
I don't think my GPS picked up the last section of the hike. So it should be longer than 6.3 miles. The map said that the trail is 7.2 miles.
Sandy and I headed to Umstead
for a morning hike. We hiked the Sycamore Trail and took some pictures
of fungi growing along the trail and the bridge over Sycamore Creek.
On the way back, we took Pott's Branch Trail back to the parking lot.

It is a dreary day in Raleigh. It rained all last night and part of
this morning, but started to clear up towards lunch time, so Sandy and I
went to Umstead
and hiked from the Reedy Creek side. We hiked from the parking lot
just a short ways on Company Mill Trail and took the short Inspiration
Trail loop. Once finished we proceeded to the bridge across Crabtree
Creek. Normally, this...
We decided to go back tonight. Unfortunately, Landon had a nasty fall towards the end of the hike. As usual, he was a tough little guy. Besides the fall, we were really enjoying this hike. We went in the opposite direction, this way you get to the lake much quicker. We only ran into a few people on the path tonight, it does not appear to be very busy during the week....
Went hiking with the Cub Scouts.

We took some time to get away from the distractions of the city with a quick hike around the Sal's Branch Trail loop in Umstead Park.
Today, I went with Rod for his Umstead Ruins Hike, going around Umstead Park and seeing old homesteads and other sites and learning about the history of the area. We started at the Reedy Creek parking lot and head down Company Mill Trail to start. Early on, Rod pointed out a rock pile, a sign of an old homestead. Then on to the Company Mill Site. Here Joe, who was a child...
This is a 4.3 mile loop that starts off on Loblolly trail then heads north off-trail along the west side of Reedy Creek lake, then follows Reedy creek back around to the Old Mill trail head.
