Dragoon Gulch trail

Hiking | 2.2 miles (0.5 miles away)
This is short trip on a city-maintained trail that provides great views of Sonora and the outlying areas. This trail gets hot - real hot - in the summer. There are several places to park. I chose the Seventh Day Adventist parking lot, but Rotary Park and the Alpine Lane lot (when open) are other options.More information on this trail can be found at:http://www.sonoraca.com/visitsonora/dragoonpage.htm

What a day! We met up with Gabe and his crew then caravaned up into the mountains, looking for areas burned by last year's fire in search of Morel, a tasty and intriguing mushroom. I was disturbed by the amount of clear-cut, presumably as a fire break, but when looking at this map and zooming out and to the north, I noticed a huge patchwork of clear-cuts throughout the hills. Anyway, we...

Hiking | 1.5 miles (5.4 miles away)
The thike is actually a 2.7 mile hike. We started recording at the top. The drive from Jamestown to the trailhead is only paved about 2/3 the way. At the end of Shell Rd, you can either park along side the road and walk the rest of the way (advised if you do not have an SUV or high clearance vehicle), or open the gate, cross the cattle guard, and close the...

Beatiful day for a hike up to the top of this lava flow.  Great views in all directions from the top.  Decided to park at the gate and hike in to the trail-head instead of opening the gate and driving the rough dirt road for about a mile.  I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have a pretty high-clearance vehicle.  Lots of shade on the trail as it winds it's way up...

Tuttletown Recreation Area Trails

Hiking | 4.2 miles (7.3 miles away)
Tuttletown Recreation Area is located at New Melones Lake on the Stanislaus River between the historic gold rush towns of Sonora and Angels Camp. There was a self-pay station at the entrance and it costs $8 for day use.  We parked at the Heron Point Day Use Area.  There are bathrooms there with flush toilets but no drinkable water.  We caught the Heron Point trailhead at the north end of the parking lot...

Hiking | 1.1 miles (9.6 miles away)
The Red Hills Nature trail is a nice hike to see wildflowers. We were a little early this trip, but will be back. Dogs like it this time of the year because of the seasonal creek that runs along the most parts of the trail.

Our first hike in the Sierra Nevadas! Maybe Lesley's first hike ever...she was begging me to drop her off in town at Curves while I did the hike, but I wasn't gonna let her off so easy! After we recovered from the posted warnings about the wildlife in the area, we really enjoyed the hike. It's actually undeveloped land owned by Pine Mountain, so not really in the wilderness, but cool none-the-less....

Hiking | 4.1 miles (6.9 miles away)
This trip is best taken in winter or early spring, when the grass is green and the temperatures are moderate. Watch out for mountain bikers, as they are allowed to use this route, although it is lightly traveled. Overall, it's a very pleasant walk with great views of New Melones Reservoir.Start at the Lupine Day use area and walk past the bathrooms and you will hit the trail. It's basically one big...

Pretty steep up and down, both ways, with a large range of perceived temperatures. The creek crossing was frozen, the south-facing slope made us break some sweat. Perfect for a winter hike on a sunny day. Might be "too much" on a hot summer day... Doable by mountain bike - at least for fit riders with some skills.

by rjhohne on Feb 22, 2014
Hiking | 4.1 miles (7.3 miles away)
This is a nice walk to take anytime except in the summer, when it can be unbearably hot. Nice views of New Melones reservoir. There is a good chance you will see deer, and maybe a bald eagle. I parked at the Heron Point parking lot, but you can also park at the fish cleaning station. I will add some photos the next time I go.
