Cedar Run Loop - White Oak Canyon

Difficult: 8.0 miles, Full day
Waterfalls galore at Shenandoah National Park

This is a great hike located in shenadoah NP, not too far from Old Rag. If you've done Old Rag you can probably do this one too. Its about 8 miles for this loop and a bit more strenuous than Old Rag (more stair stepping). There are two parking lots that intersect this trail, one on skyline drive south of big meadows, and one that needs to be accessed...

Shenandoah - Old Rag Mountain Loop
by edgarstiles on Oct 04, 2010
Etlan, Virginia, United States
Hiking | 9.5 miles
I was in Virginia recently, and looking for a hike to do. I did some research before going, and found that this is one of the essential hikes in the Southeast. There was a fair amount of scrambling near the summit, which made it fun, but it was a little cloudy. All in all, totally worth the trip.Later in the year, the leaves will be brilliant colors.

Hiking | 7.3 miles
We were supposed to hike Stoney Mountain a little south of here but I screwed up on the directions and got Stoney Mountain mixed up with Stoney Man.  Rather then burn another hour or so going to Stoney Mountain we decided to hike Stoney Man.  We made it a little longer by using some of the AT.  The hike was a little crowded but the views were well worth it.  At the...

Northern Virginia Hiking Clubhttp://www.nvhc.com/OLD RAGSaturday, October 09, 2010Hike Leader: Mano Malayanur This is perhaps the most famous and spectacular hike in the area. Nine miles with about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. Steep trail with lots of rock scrambling and boulder hopping near the summit.Old Rag Mountain is underlain by Old Rag Granite, named for its ubiquitous exposure on the mountain, formed during the Grenville Orogeny about a billion years ago. Hiking | 9.4 miles
Strickler knob has some of the best views of all the hikes I've been on.  A challenging rock scramble to the top with some really cool ridge hiking along the way.

Cedar Run White Oak trail loop

Hiking | 9.0 miles
My second loop on this trail - the hard way.  Up Cedar Run and down Whiteoak.  The falls were beautiful and the weather wasn't bad untill about 2/3's the way through the hike.  All hikes should end with a swim in cold spring water!

White Oak Canyon and Cedar Run

Hiking | 8.0 miles
It was a cold day with intermittent rain and snow showers, but it was a great day to hike White Oak Canyon and Cedar Run.  The original plan was to hike Bear Church Rock, but we could not see the mountain summits through the clouds and decided on a hike that did not depend on better weather. The trail snakes its way up to the first of six major waterfalls fairly quickly.  Waterfall #1 (about 60 feet...

Shenandoah National Park - Hawksbill via Lower Hawksbill Trail

Hiking | 1.6 miles
This is the highest point in the Shenandoah National Park.  Since I was in the area after a 21 mile backpacking trip, I thought I would knock this summit off the list.  But to make it easier I shed the backpack.  My dad accompanied me up this short, but steep trail to the top.  Excellent views of the park from the top.  There is also a day use shelter.

Hiking | 8.1 miles
I had an early start to the trail since the weather was going to deteriorate as the day went along.  I arrived at the trailhead around 8:15 and prepared to make the four mile climb.  I was the only one there and I figured that the impending weather would keep the trail pretty desolate.  I left the parking area and headed along the Rapidan River Trail for a half a mile.  The trail was nearly flat and offered...
