Lone Peak is the "notched" peak at the top of the huge mountain on the south side of the road as your traveling up Little Cottonwood canyon.  The peak is visible from most of the Salt Lake and Utah County areas.  All approaches to the peak are long with substantial elevation gain.  My son (Tyler) and I decided a couple weeks previous that we were going to do the hike.  A friend...

Hiking | 7.1 miles (13.7 miles away)
I wanted to go on a couple of backpack trips again this summer so I need to start getting in better shape.  I thought I picked a fairly easy hike, but this hike was much harder then I anticipated.  It was uphill the entire way.I went with Jeff Wood (friend) and Ben Pehrson (brother).  From the beginning my back was out of place (which rarely happens to me) luckily Ben carried my small pack...

Climb per mile: 766ftAscent Rating: 1.4Distance Rating: 1.1Overall Rating: 3.2The GPS data has correct elevation data for all points except the starting elevation, so it is over-reporting the climb.I recorded the trip in 3 separate tracks and merged them together, but EveryTrail is reporting the length .6 miles over for some reason. This isn't the furthest I've gone on this trail, but it is the first time this year that I'd not encountered...

Hiking | 14.2 miles (6.7 miles away)
I hiked Lone Peak with my 9 year old son and a good friend. We ascended following the Jacob's Ladder trail. While we had read that there was limited/no water July on, we found ample water at the junction (which cuts across to Outlaw Cabin) as well as further up the trail. At about 10k feet, we were heading off the trail to allow my 9 year old to use the "facilities"...

Hiking | 6.5 miles (5.5 miles away)
Our family held a family reunion in Park City in 2007. I thought that while I was in Utah I would attempt a peak. Lone Peak turned out to be a fairly tough hike. I started around 5AM, solo, and made it to a false summit at around noon. Unfortunately, I only had my GPS track (no map, mistake), and I climbed myself into a dead end. ...

It was a hard hike, especially with 60 lbs of gear on my back.  But it wasn't unbearable by any means.  It gets steeper toward the very top when you get to the switchbacks,...

A great early-in-the-year hike. Much of the hike is exposed, so the snow tends to melt earlier than on other trails, although in May, there will often be snow still in the canyon. Hiked this with my 5 year old son.

Climb per mile: 885ftAscent Rating: 2.3Distance Rating: 1.6Overall Rating: 4.7Since I didn't have much time for a hike, I figured the Desolation to the Overlook would fit just right.  It was my first time on this trail actually.. or at least this section of it.It was a pretty consistent climb all the way, and the seemingly endless switchbacks were balanced out by all the shade and a well-established trail. It was a good...

Hiking | 8.7 miles (14.1 miles away)
Trip stats, data, and additional information can be found below this summaryThe trip to Red Pine Lake can easily be enjoyed as a day hike, and is definitely one of the top places to visit each summer.  I've done it before, but it had been about 9 years and I didn't have the time or energy during that trip to hike up to the upper lakes.. which is a very rewarding experience.So...

Hiking | 6.8 miles (10.3 miles away)
I decided to get one more good hike in before winter, and I chose Dry Creek Canyon because I have never been there before, and I have always wanted to explore this corner of the Wasatch. I arrived at the trail head around 8:30 and was plesantly surprised to find only one vehicle. The trail is an old service road that was once used to maintain a pipeline that brought water to a...

This was a hike we took some boy scouts on. On one hand the snow near the top made it more challenging.  On the other hand, sliding down the snow faces made for a fun and quick trip down.

Hiking | 3.6 miles (13.4 miles away)
We finally got around to checking out Timpanogos Cave. A pretty tough walk up to the cave then a fun trip through 3 caves. Would have loved to do the tour of the cave again - perhaps next year combined with the picnic lunch 1/4 mile away and then a stop at the water park.

Nice little hike off Wasatch Blvd. You start from a parking lot and head up some stairs. Then you find your self in a neighborhood. Seems like people get lost here. Head south east to a gate to enter the trail. Then you pass between two houses. Then I nice little hike up to a waterfall and a few small caves. Fun for the family.
