Plumas County might seem to have only three stoplights, but it has more than its fair share of great lakes to discover.
An hour north of Truckee and a world away from the often busy Lake Tahoe traffic, the Lakes Basin is a tranquil escape full of beautiful lakes and great hiking opportunities. We've chosen ten mile loop trail which weaves around some of the prettiest lakes, provides some high ridgeline hiking with excellent vantage points and also links to a detour...

I am rehabilitating after ACL surgery and in search of easy hikes. This was a wonderful hike, up a well maintained road from the Ski Bowl to Eureka Lake. The 1.3 miles from the bowl parking to the lake we had about a 1,000 foot elevation gain, I don't know if that's a lot or not. Before my surgery I hiked much steeper terrain, so this seemed relatively mild compared to what...
A very nice loop hike around some of the most beautiful lakes in the Gold Lake region. The views are breathtaking.
A very nice, short hike in the Sierra Buttes / Graeagle / Gold lakes region. The two lakes are simply beautiful.
Just a quick hike up to Upper Sardine Lakes after we wisely aborted hiking to the top of Sierra Buttes fire lookout at 5:30pm.

Another beautiful and very scenic hike. It rivals the Donner Peak and Mount Judah hike we did last week. We chose to follow jhannon's trip. We parked at the end of the paved road, although we found that many people drove on the gravel road a little farther to another parking area. The trail starts climbing up right away, but that's the only way you can get to the top. The stairs...
Beautiful hike to the Sierra Buttes. A bit difficult due to snow cover. It was my first time here, so finding the trail buried under the snow resulted in a number of wrong turns. The views are fantastic!Full write-up:http://tmeekins.blogspot.com/2011/08/sierra-buttes-july-2011.html

A quick hike in Lakes Basin Recreational Area. We were thwarted by a stream crossing at Round Lake (it was knee deep under water). We still managed to see 6 glacier moraine lakes in just over 2 hours: Big Bear Lake, Little Bear Lake, Cub Lake, Long Lake, Silver Lake, and Round Lake. The lakes were small pristine and had gorgeous reflections of the surrounding mountains on the surfaces of each.

We actually started at point shown as end.
Didn't track first part of trip since Everytrail had a pop up which I didn't see saying accuracy was 200m, and required a response before tracking started. Canoed across lake thinking we could walk on Lake Center Road to get to Gold Lake trail head near the lodge. Road was posted No Trespassing so had to hike along highway from the gravel boat ramp and picnic...
